My 20g QT tank with a small piece of live rock and live sand is cycled and my first fish went in today. One thing Im trying to google is feeding. I have small maxi jet power head and an AC50 filter. Should I turn these off and drop flakes/food near where the goby is hanging out or just leave everyone on and drop some food in and let him work it out?

Any help appreciated.

I would try feeding it mysis shrimp. If you are feeding flakes well they aren't really the best thing to feed gobys. They have a big apatite. If you do have any frozen fish food I would try feeding it to the goby. And it might be better if you turned the pumps off but it's your choicez

please no low quality food like flake...

Pe mysis, hakari mysis, Selcon, nutramar-ova, etc......

My Watchman stole a large chunk of Silver Side from my Nem today. The piece was as big as the fishes head, lol

Bigger questions is why is sand and liverock in a QT system? QT system should be bare and if you have a fish that needs some hiding places, get them some PVC elbows and pieces.

Other than that, feed a very small amount. IMHO a good quality flake is fine. Mysis and froze food is good as well BUT you need to defrost it in some tank water and you need to feed a very small amount. How much? well for 1 fish in a QT tank I would SHAVE the frozen cube. Really you need that little. and remember, fish are not like you, most do not HAVE to eat 3-5 times a day.

On a good note, I applaud you for trying a QT tank! Seriously, that is a step in the right direction.

Yes, you are correct for most fish that does not need sand...

Disagree, and I realize that you have been out of the hobby for awhile...there are many new perspectives....

Wrasses & Sand loving fish should have that in QT.

High Quality frozen PE Mysis & Hikari Mysis (and Rods & Larrys) with Selcon is preferred over almost everything. No one feeds flakes anymore, and Great quality pellets are great if you can get your fish to eat 'em.

Nutramar-Ova & Live Blackworms for the most difficult of fish.

This was my QT tank started in early January & I broke it down today, as my second of 2 Anampses Twistii went in display today!

"nobody feeds flakes anymore?" we sure do sell a lot of them, wonder what everybody is using them for?....lol
for the record I still use them, and they are extremely nutritious and balanced.

Thank you all for the feedback, i am starting with flake but I will mix it up. He is coming out at feeding time so I am happy there. He and his pistol buddy have taken up residence under my live rock and seem happy together!

Also with the Live Rock and sand all the research I have done only suggest dont use it because if you have to medicate it will kill everything. That is why my sand and live rock are in a big flat Tupperware container that I can remove easily should I need too.

My goby loves mysis, nori he attacks rips half the sheet off and darts back under the rock shelf. He never seems interested in my pellets though.

Ralph, we are going to have to agree to disagree on that QT set up.. If your fish has something when you bring it in, now your rock and sand has it. QT should be bare IMHO, you should be able to inspect the bottom for any clues about what is going on. You should be able siphon out the tank entirely when needed. Your wrasse or sand loving fish did not have that when he was held in LA, he did not have that when he was held at DR Fosters, he did not have that when he was at your LFS. I am sure he will survive 2 weeks more without it in your QT. Just my opinion though, and YOU know I have a lot of them!!!

As for the food, we disagree here too. somethings may have changed and I always advocate diversity in feeding, but there is no problem in my eyes feeding a good quality flake. Hell in QT I would even advocate it since it is a bit easier to control small amounts of food and a bit easier to suphon out of the bottom of a bare bottom.. :)

I had to duck out of town for work but the 2 days I watched and the 5 my wife has been on watch shows he is eating the flake, I will be home tomorrow in time for a water change and maybe for some better food!

here is the container I was talking about so I can remove the sand and rock when needed. I also temporarily hooked up my led that will go over my DT and the goby is out a lot more now.

I use flake food but also frozen 2-3 times a week for some of my more picky fish in my display but in qt I do frozen and feed sparingly.

Take a knife cut cube into smaller pieces, its what I do.

Edit: just be careful

ok so half a cube got rinsed in RO water twice and using a baster I put about half of that in. The goby went at it but so did the pistol shrimp. That's the most I have ever seen him! So the other half is still in RO water and back in my beer fridge. Will that be ok to use in the morning.
