Im wondering how high to run 8 t5's ran by 2 icecap 660's over my 120g tank. How far does the bottom of the bulb need to be from the water from the water? This set up will be in a 16in canopy. Do I need to run fans over part of the light.I thought I saw something about fans going across the bulbs or endcaps or something.this is not a fixture its retro fit with individual reflectors

I believe mine are about 12" or so off the water. (i'll check tonight for sure) I have fans blowing across mine to keep the tank below 80 degrees. 4/6 of mine are being over driven so that puts out extra heat. The fans also keep the bulbs cooler for a longer life.

My 8X24 ATI-PM is 7" above the tank top, ~8" above the waterline 24" deep tank (3" or so of sand).

Fixture has fans in it.

I have 6 overdriven T5s on my 75 and they are about 12 1/2 inches from the water, this helps keep any splashing water off them. With them being overdriven I run a fan across both ends of the bulbs. 2 6" clip on fans, one coveing each end of the bulbs.

i still dont get it...all this over, front , back, etc...! :o)

someone put a pic of how the fans should face!

I think i have heard that u should have all the "labels" on the same side and that that is the most important side to keep cool, but should the fans be on the side of the canopy blowing length wise, or the back of the canopy blowing forwards....there i go using those directional words...post pics!

I have a fan blowing over each end of the bulbs, not down the length of the bulbs. My fans are in the back of the canopy pointing across the ends blowing towards the front of the canopy. I don't have a pic, but if you open the front doors of the canopy the fans are blowing toward the front, but going across the ends. I contact icecap and this is what the recommend for overdriven bulbs, they said you don't need the fan blowing down the lenght of the bulb just blowing back to front or vice versa, as long as it is across the ends.

Thats what Im doing. I bought 2 clip on fans from walmart and blowing across all end caps.

Are you growing sps in your tank?

ok, so they recommended both ends not just the labeled side? that is what i was thinking anyway so i wouldnt have to cut the sides of my custom canopy... thanks!

I don't think they specified one or both ends, but both get hot,so only made sense to me to cool both. No harm in cooling both if you can.
