Filter sock foaming like crazy out of top???

Has anyone discovered a method for preventing filter socks from foaming like mad out the top. My sock has soooo many bubbles coming out of it. I have tried lengthening the pipe, originally just above the water line, so that it is several inches below the water line well inside the sock but it only helped a small amount.

Turn it off... if the water goes in at an angle it does.better and if it has a rise tube a ove the water it cuta down on the bubbles and noise

Turn on a Protien skimmer and remove what ever is causing the excessive foaming. A filter sock acts like a mini down draft skimmer.

Skimmer on as of this afternoon...YAY!

The bubbles are caused by the large amount of water and air entering the sump, the bubbles can't disperse outward due to the sock so they are redirected up to the sock opening and, yes act like a skimmer. I was thinking about a perforated pipe to help allow the air to escape prior to entering the water...?

It won't work. It just happens. Once the skimmer has been online for a while, you'll see a differance with the bubbles.

To elaborate: once a skimmer skims out all the nasties, the foam head drops. The same will happen when all the nasties are out of your water.

Problem solved. I was even able to raise the sock up until I get a holder. :tongue:

Great idea. I'm going to hunt some foam down and do the same with mine.

Oh and now my overflow is super quite. It probably knocked out 90% of the gurgling.

It is best to fully rinse them before putting them in the sump. Just in case the LFS or wherever you purchased them didn't explain that.
Looks like you have a nice fix there. Look around, there is a thread in here regarding "mesh type" filter socks. They are easier to clean, work really well!

be careful with the top of that sock being above the sump line. When it clogs/fills it may drain over the top and outside the sump.

Randy, you are asking for a flood with that set up like that. Your sock needs to be an inch below the top of the sump at least. When the sock gets full and the water starts coming out of the top, it will splash or spray all over the place.

Yeah, I know. It's just tempoary, I'm changing out the filter daily right now while my cycle gets going. I'm trying to decide if buying a crappy holder for way too much money or building my own.
I can't believe I spent so much time playing with different pipe configurations with no success. The foam cover is working great and I can hear the TV now with-out the glug...gulg...glug...haha

Here is something I use that might work for you. I made this out of a piece of 4" PVC pipe and a toilet flange. Drilled some holes in the bottom area to allow water to exit. Holds a 4" filter sock perfectly. I use it to catch fines from my carbon and GFO, but it could just as easily be a filter sock holder for a sump. You can get 2 foot lengths of the PVC from Lowes for a few dollars.
