Well, I am not sure why, but I changed to a new filter sock today and my skimmer went nuts. It looked like I should have rensed my sock first. Should I be concerned? I assume the "dust" is little pieces of filter floss?

Things are calming down. Skimmer is still a little crazy, but it too is stabilizing as time passes.

Yeah you always want to fully rinse new Filter Socks. Normally the store will remind you of this.
Even after i wash mine in the washer, i fully rinse them again and then ring the excess, place them in a bucket(ring side down) to dry.

It's probably just the "new" in it. I've seen posts about this before, and it's probably some sort of residue on the socks, from the manufacturing process.

It's probably harmless to your livestock, just makes your skimmer freak out.

If you use carbon, try changing that and it might help, and keep an eye on your skimmer to avoid floods, til it settles back down.

+1 probably left over detergent. Before I learned better ways u used to wash mine in detergent. Skimmer went crazy but no harm was done. Probably did it 50 times before I figured it out lil

This happens with new socks for some reason, even if you rinse out with water prior to installation. Next time, turn your skimmer off for a couple hours after you put it in service, then turn it back on and you should be fine.

I have not tried this, but maybe a light bleach or vinegar soak prior to installation would take care of the foaming issue as well without having to turn the skimmer off at all.

I just unplugged my skimmer cup drain and let the skimmer wet skim until it calmed down. I probably ended up removing a gallon of water that I had to replace.
