I'm finally gonna break down and get a filter sock system going on my tank and have a couple of questions for you pros. I'm leanig towards the BRS mount and 4 inch socks. My sump is a 20 long and its 12 iches deep. The questions I have are the length of the socks. the brs seems to mount a little higher than the others I've looked at. All the socks I've seen in person are really long and may cause a problem in my sump. What would you guys recomend concerning the length of socks I get. Is there any advantage of having a longer sock vs a shorter sock?

I personally don't run them and never have. Just too much of a pain to maintain, and I don't want to filter out my pods in the sock.

That said, I would THINK (not to be confused with actual knowledge) a longer sock (avoiding 3rd grade giggle here) would have more surface area and be able to go a bit longer before needing a good cleaning.

I would also think that the length would depend on your overflow rate. A small overflow wouldn't require a real big/deep sock whereas a monster overflow certainly would.

That's just my speculation anyhow...

I will ALWAYS run a filter sock on my future systems. The amount of trash they catch is mind blowing. (I am feeding a lot due to the idol.) I will take the risk of losing a pod every now and then to help keep my levels in check.

I should have qualified my reply. I have an eheim canister filter for mechanical filtration. If I didn't have the filter, I'd probably consider the sock.
