After being woken up by my 19 month old at 2:30, taking him downstairs and spending 3 hours getting him back to sleep on the couch I noticed how loud my overflow is. Not that it has gotten louder or that I had not noticed it before but it's 5 am, otherwise quiet in the house, and I can't go back to sleep now. It didn't help that I was at Rich's yesterday and he was showing off how quiet his DIY bean animal overflow was.

So, now I'm on a mission. Did a little research on durso style overflows ( which I have ) and the commonly reported problems. None of which seemed to match my symptoms. Spending a few minutes trying to track down the source of the noise it wasn't actually my overflow as much as it was my return and a whole drilled in the bottom corner of the pvc 90 to prevent siphoning. The noise was coming from the spraying of water. I found a piece of sponge which I was able to wedge between it and the overflow box and voila, much less noise now. I can still hear the overflow but it is at least 75% quieter now in my family room than before. At least until my son wakes back up, he's stirring already.

Good deal. But, it isn't blocking the air from breaking the siphon is it? Would hate to hear about a lake in the middle of your floor. :-)

I used sponge to ensure it would allow air to flow. Plus one of my lockline return lines are very close to the top of the water if it did clog.
