First skimmate comes quick, the rest isn't so much!

Just because the skimmate "gunk" doesnt make it intop the collection cup (vs. the neck), doesnt mean the skimmer is running poorly. If it in the cup, or neck, or outer space, it isnt in your tank. For some reason, aquarist like to see, touch, smell, collect, who knows what, the skimmate. However, in terms of functionality, whether its in the neck or the cup, or down the drain, its not in the tank water.

yes but why not have your skimmer running at peak? if the neck has gunk built up on it the the foam cant run up and over the way it was designed to do. the gunk causes resistance to the foam. yes its better to have it at least out of your tank, but let the machine do its job as it was designed to do.

You can build your own self cleaning head really easily..Take a drill bit and pop a hole in the top of your collection cup..go to home depot and get a line of rubber for like 15 bucks..Make some fins and mount a remote control car motor on to the shaft..Put a switch on it and flip it on 2 times a day..Thats what I do...

Yeah dude, this is what i'm saying. It would cost like $20 to make this... So why are the other guys selling it for $1200+?

And for real, get some pics / video of this thing in action. :yay:

I would be almost</em> fine with having to turn the cleaning fins manually. The more i think about it a remote control car's steering/throttle servo would have enough torque and run at a slow speed. PERFECT! :)

The circuit board, R&D and quality construction and materials is what you pay for. And don't forget the conversion from Euros and the import duties. The markup is pretty stout too, don't get me wrong, but it's hardly a $20 project (I'm talking about the Deltec model, btw).

Yeah, but with all the other expensive stuff -- this is something folks would be willing to spend $50 bucks on for something cheap. Go big on the other equipment. Let the skimmer cleaner be el cheapo.

If it gets its job done, and its not the finest piece of mechanical machinery known to man, who cares? Its cleaning fish poo.
