fish in overflow

I currently have a problem with my baby blue tang going into my overflow. Apparently she likes to speep by it at night and gets pulled in. I wouldnt mind this that much but its a 300 gallon tank and in order to access the overflow i haver to pull the top off the tank and it takes at min an hour to get here out and im doing this on a regular basis. I tried putting some screen like mesh but it backs the water flow off to much and the water just goes over the top instead of threw the slits. Any idea on what to do. Should i just trade her for a bigger one so i dont have this problem?

Are you sure the tang is slipping through the slits. I think it might be around the pipe which comes out of the overflow into the tank. I had goby which used to slide through there. If that is the case, I would place a sponge in that area using rubber band.

I had the same problem and solved it by putting a piece of eggcrate over the top of the overflow.

Yea i still have the mesh covering around the pipes... one of my larger clownfish also does-did the same thing except he would go over the slits some how, he hasnt did it in the past 2 weeks its just that tang...

Edit: I thought about the eggcrate but im scared that if the fish somehow got ontop of it they would die before i noticed since it happens at night

Is using a heat gun to warp the eggcrate into a curve and then attaching that vertically to the back-side of the overflow a possibility? It wouldn't impede water flow, but it would prevent the fish from going through it. The only downside I see to this is that the eggcrate wouldn't exactly look classy.

Since he has a canopy you won't see the eggcrate. I use two pieces about 8x4 on my overflows of my 155 bow front and with the canopy in place they can't be seen. I had a Niger Trigger that was constantly jumping over into the overflow and I had to take the canopy off each time.

just went through this hassle again with my fairy wrasse. i think ill try the eggcrate tonight and see how that works
