Tank's been settling in nicely for a little over a month now.

I guess it's time to start thinking about fish. I'd like to put a lot of thought into which fish to put into it, and I'd really appreciate suggestions and advice.

So far fish haven't been a priority in my tanks, more of an opening act rather than the main event. My first tank was fishless for the first seven months of its life. And I definitely spent more time looking at the corals than the fish, but now I'd like to become more of a fish guy to round out my reefing experience.

So far I have had the following:
Red Elegant Pseudochromis
Royal Gramma
Red Firefish

I really liked them all, but my favorite was definitely the Pseudochromis. Its boldness, curiosity, high level of activity and bright color really impressed me. The Gramma and Firefish were great and watching them interact was always interesting. I enjoyed taking care of my fish. None of them were ever sick in any way and they grew and held their color. Sometimes I get by on beginner's luck.

A little info. on my setup:
It's a 30 Cube containing about 35 pounds of mature live rock. Filtration is a Tunze Reefpack 200 and about 20X flow. No sump or fuge.

It houses my collection of Trumpets, Frogs, Zoos and Mushrooms and my prized Dragon's Breath Macroalgae that sprouted out of one of my rocks.
At the moment, it houses hermits, astreas, ceriths, hitchhiker snails, a large brittle star named "Harry" that I handfeed and lots of tiny brittle stars yet unnamed ( LOL).

After seven months of staring at a tank without fish, I actually really enjoy seeing all the pods, tiny shrimp, and worms doing their thing. I love the tiny feather dusters and even "Maude" the 12" bristle worm has a place in my heart. So I'd hate to put a fish into the tank that decimates their populations.

So I'm in a bit of a dilemma here. Most carniverous fish will limit the population of microcrustacians that I enjoy watching, and a herbiverous fish will probably wipe out my macros that I enjoy.

Here's my first stocking plan: a Black and White Clown and an Orchid Dottyback. I'd add them at the same time. I figure the Clown might stick to the open water up higher in the tank and possibly host one or the other Frogspawn while the Dottyback would stick to the rockwork that I arranged with lots of caves and passages for it to swim thru. This was my original plan when I set the tank up, so I arranged it accordingly. I've always thought the clown's behavior is very interesting and a Black And White would look great with the bright colors of the Frogspawns. And I've always thought the Orchid's color is amazing and enjoyed the way they swim and behave.

I just don't know if this is a mix that would work or be a recipe for constant aggression.

Lately I've been wanting a Coral Beauty, but I'm pretty sure that everything in my tank would suffer from its nibbling. But maybe....

And then there is the Flame Angel and 6 Line Wrasse combo that I have been considering lately....

Anyone willing to offer advice or experience or suggestions or willing to join in a decision that might last as long as seven months ( LOL ) out there?

BTW- I just tossed three Peppermint Shrimp in there a few days ago. By day Two they had eaten almost all of my Aiptasia. Yeah. I even like my Majanos and Ball Anemonaes. ( Guess I shouldn't have spent all that time staring at bare rock when I started in the hobby. Took me four months to get the first coral. )

Thanks for reading. I'd really enjoy reading your stocking plans and experiences. :)

I have a R. Gramma, O. Clown, Yellow Watchman Goby and a blue Devel Damsel in my 30. The Damsel has been behaving so he can stay for now.

My 30g has a mated pair of Maroon Clowns, Royal Gramma, Coral Beauty and a Green Mandrin Dragonet. I also have a 20g sump/ref.

I have a coral beauty and it doesn't bother my corals. I have frogspawn, trumpet, mystery leather and a bunch of zoas.

Yeah, my coral beauty spend its time grazing on my algea..But if you want a fish to watch:
1. I recommend mandarine goby (best to buy it from another club members and make sure they eat, buying it from the pet store are usually wild caught and will die).
2. Lawnmower blenny or bicolor blenny..They are a character.

John put some pics of your tank up!

As for fish suggestions, I always recommend against any pseudochromis so although the orchid is beautiful don't do it! They like all other pseudos are far too territorial.

I think the black and white clowns would look nice, get two... its fun to watch mated pairs interact. I personally love watching fish interact, the faster and the more colorful a fish is, the better. As such, I have a thing for wrasse and anthias :).

I would recommend a small school of flasher wrasses for your aquarium. They are less apt to jumping out than fairy wrasses, mine have never made an attempt, and they stay small. It's also fun to watch the male interact with the other flashers by "flashing" them :). Flashers are cheap as well, but I recommend getting 4 for them to be happy. If you do get 1 flasher then I recommend using a mirror for a few hours a day to get the male to flash. They seem to do poorly without any social interaction...

Other than the flashers, I think a rainfordi or hector's goby would go nicely in your tank. They don't bother larger macros but are known to eat hair algae and are sand sifters as well. They also stay small, but will make a dent in your pod population if you don't get them eating prep'd foods.

"Diary of a Mad Reefer"... you guys crack me up! Too true!! LOL
( Note to self: T.M.I. )

Alright, here's some nuts-and-bolts info. to go with the above "nutso" info.

At the 50 day mark:
temp: 78.7
SG: 1.026
pH: 8.2
alk: 5.26 meq/L
Ca: 391 ppm
trites: nada
trates: nil
phates: zilch

Bit surprised by the last three stats since I've been feeding the corals a lot of mysis lately.

Celebrated by doing my first water change: 2 Gallons.
Looks like it's Time For Some Fish!

Now back to the action...
Interesting. So the Coral Beauty might be a "GO". Glad to hear of so many good experiences with them.

msnajkowski- I do like the Watchmans, but I'm sure I'd get one that lived in the back of the tank behind the rock. Good luck with the Damsel. Amazing range of colors in your stocking plan! Like a rainbow in perpetual motion.

jefft- Another great plan. I never knew all these fish could thrive in a 30. No fuge here, so I don't think the Mandarin would work. You have good taste in fish. ( Can I say that here??? LOL )

balagan- How big do they get and how big is your system? I don't know much about them and thoughts of "Big, Bored Fish in a Little Tank" keep running thru my head. Do they live up to their name?

purpleGORILLA- Yeah. That's my concern about the Angels: grazing and having to supply enough algae for them. But they definitely sound worth it.
Mandarines are so unique, but I'm not sure that I or the tank would be up to the challenge, and I'd probably have to wait forever to find another reefer willing to part with a healthy one. Love the Bicolors!! Hadn't thought of them. Good recommendations.

FI- Man! You do such a good job taking those pictures of your avatars. Wish you'd take a few shots of my tank. I really need to work on my camera skills.
But my tank will never be as photogenic as your subjects.

I was hoping for some flashers in the 70 --- if it ever gets set up. But then again, I've been smitten by those purple tilefish and flame hawks....
Urghhh...back to the 30.

I've heard the Orchids are a bit more laid back. But, as usual, I could have heard wrong. I know the Red Elegant was one inch of pure meanness, but endearing in its own mean little way.

I know you're the man to talk to when it comes to flasher wrasses. A school of them would be amazing. You might be on to something there.

Flasher Wrasses, cheap? Damsels are cheap!! LOL
Which would you recommend? I want lots of color.

Thanks, everyone!
I'd like to hear more.

Well I've seen flashers for under 20 bucks whereas fairy wrasses can get crazy pricey. I actually think you should go with a sixline in your 30, and maybe the flashers for your 70.

Here are some pics for you to peruse... note that this is what they look like when displaying aka flashing. So only the male will look like that and not all the time... but when they do flash... wow :).
