Flame Angel.

Not really a slight risk.. More of a real concern.. If in fact they do have a taste for polyps they can be a major task to remove from the tank..stressing out other fish and corals in the tank in there sloshing around with a net.. Best bet would be to get one from a member that had one in a reef already.. But even then that's still a gamble..

We have never had any issues with our flame. We may just be lucky. I know others that have had issues with their flame.

Ok. I guess I will have to keep and eye on the joker and see what happens. Catching him want be that bad I made a fish trap that works well.

I don't have experience with the flame angels in my system, but have always really liked the look of them. I have read up on them quite a bit, and it seems like they are hit or miss... It seems like MOST of the time they work well, but there are individuals that will damage your corals.

I personally plan on getting one in the near future. In the event that it turns out to not be reef safe, you can always sell it off.

I have had no issues with my flame angels the one i currently have is over 10mos old and behaving nicely. I recommend trying it out.

I bought one pretty early in my time in the hobby, back when I believed everything I read about fish care and precautions on wholesalers' websites. Luckily mine never bothers anything.

I've had mine about 4 months now. He swims in and around the corals picking at the rocks. He's grazes constantly and I've never seen him pick a Polyp, coral or anything. I think I've been lucky.

Wonder if the location where they're collected from has anything to do with their coral nipping disposition?

No clue... mine is a Marshall Islands one (based on word of Creation and visual appearance, whether that is reliable or not), and is a model citizen.

Well so far I have'nt seen him pick at any of my corals. He's only been in my tank for three days. He's constanly grazing on the rocks and glass like he's a tang. I think he pick on the rocks more then my tang. Maybe my chevron tang can show my sailfin what to do come friday.

Mine does the same. Love it. I have had 2. The first one nipped on digi's only but this one that I have had for a few months nothing. Then again I have no sps right now.

I've had a flame angle for 2 years. It has never picked at my clam or any of the corals...

do as dawgdude says, try it in a QT with a few corals...

Fish don't read the textbooks. Some are model citizens, others are problematic.

I had a Coral Beauty that left everything alone except Xenia (not necessarily a bad thing!)

I wouldn't put any Centropyge sp. in with clams - that's just begging for trouble.

I've seen Flames be perfect, and I've seen them be selective and nip on certain types of corals, and leave others alone, and I've seen some mow down everything they can munch. It really just depends on the individual.

Add me to the list of those who have a flame angel with no real issues. Now I have caught him eating polyps. When I put nori into the tank for my yellow tang, he'll eat that as well. As long as I'm doing that, he leaves everything alone.

No real issues, yet it eats polyps.. I would call that an issue.. :)
Like charlie said.. If you leave and it gets hungry and starts munching down that's a real issue.. And the potential is there for it to start ignoring nori and just start wasting polyps..

Not really. The only thing he ever touched was my yellow polyps but since I lost them all due to my HA outbreak, it's not an issue anymore.
