so I wanted to get a flame scallop and the guy at the (somewhat)LFS told me that they are impossible to keep alive for more than a month or so. Is this true? I thought since they are filter feeders I could target feed. Any input/advice?

It is true, they are very hard to keep long term. I don't think you can target feed them enough...

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll pass. They are beautiful, and I would hate to watch one suffer in my tank.

You might get 3 months... :(

We call them "rental items" and we don't carry them.

Your LFS guy was right - they have a poor record of survival in captivity... which makes one wonder why they bring them in in the first place?

No kidding I've got one named Steve that's been in my tank for 13 months now.

Steve is happy!

FWIW, re: scallops- I found this interesting...

lol my first pair befor i bought a yellow head wrasse lived 9 months my new pair have been in the tank almost a month. the trick is you dont want to over clean your water i do not use a uv or any polisher filters but if you want featherdusters and fine filter users you cant keep the tank imaculate . they need junk swirling all the time. heck even 20 yrs ago they were the easiest thing to keep alive but the reefs of today are too clean for them to last long.just my experience and openion.
