fluval 13.5

Hey guys,
Downsizing my 55 gallon to a fluval 13.5 I bought new live sand and pull some LR from my 55 to put into the 13.5 I was going to cycle without using any cycle starter hoping the bacteria from the existing LR would be fine. Anyone have experience doing that? Bad idea good idea? anything to watch out for? I am in no rush to move to the 13.5 so I have plenty of time.

Only concern is any pests from the old tank will potentially be in the new. That's about it though.
