Freaking out

I picked up my new RTBA friday night. I placed it in my 125-gallon and "boxed it in" to help it get acclimated. I checked the tank about 2 hrs later and noticed it swimming/around around in the tank. After being in class all day and 3 hrs of driving, I decided to moved it in the morning.

Saturday morning comes and there is no anemone in sight. Little worried, but I know that these things move around, so I did my usual tank duties.

Sunday morning comes and still no sight of it. I have no moved every rock and can't find it. I did read up on them and it stated that they do go into hiding at the beginning to give it some time. It is about 2" - 3" in diameter.

So now I am coming to the experts. What should I do now?

"swimming around" doesn't sound good. They usually attach quickly and go into hiding. Did you say you moved all the rocks? Did you check the overflow? Bare in mind that a 2" uninflated can be tiny and you might miss it.

Do you have any exposed powerhead intakes? Have you checked your overflow?

Actually where I was going is that if there are unprotected intakes, it might have been puréed if it was floating about the tank They can also go over the overflow and end up in the overflow box.

Hopefully it's just hunkered down in a crevice someplace.

Well very fortunately, I don't have an overflow box. All my filtration is HOB and also don't have any powerheads yet. It did go into a ball when it got into the waterflow of the Aquaclear, but then opened up. It did to the bottom a cpl of times, but I guess it didn't like those spots. I didn't think that I could curl up that small and go into a rock. So, how long do I need to wait before I go fishing again?

If it walked behind a rock where you can't see it, it might be there still.

If it floated up to the intake on the HOB it might have got pulled inside. Look inside your filter box, you might see remnants if that's what happened.

If it got a foothold on a rock it may have just moved out of your sight but usually you'll see it unless you've got a lot of spots around back that you cannot see.

I wouldn't go fishing at all. If you do find it what will that really do for you? It will def stress the animal out whether you find it or not if it is still alive in your tank. If alive it will come out sooner or later. It needs fed/light. I know the frustration of not getting to enjoy your livestock (i have two clowns that I never see unless its feeding time) but be patient. Good luck!

This is the tank during the day. At night I don't even see them. I have a million and one bta of all sorts in there. It'll find it happy zone and stay. Whether its in sight or not isn't alwys up to u

Thanks for the info. I have a Huma that messed with any invert that I have put in the tank. Will it mess with the anemone also? I did have a Condy that disappeared that has yet to surface after a nealy 2 months.

If the condy hasn't surfaced in 2 months, it's a safe assumption it's dead and gone (decayed). It's one thing for them to shrivel up for a day or two, but 2 months, it's dead.

Have you checked your parameters?

I conduct a water check every other week and as of yesterday I could not ask for more perfect numbers.

Well that's a good sign.

Wouldn't hurt to double check with a different kit/instrument.

I encountered a problem that a client had today where his refractometer was seriously out of calibration...

That may not be an issue at all for you - it just came to mind as I dealt with that situation today.

Ok, it's been 3 days now and still no RBTA. How long do I have to wait. I cleaned my glass tops, so now the lights are stronger. Filtration cleaning time is tomorrow. Tested water again, other than the salinity being a little high for my comfort level, the rest of the perimeters are still normal.

Usually when a nem dies it will pollute the tank. if your tank is clean, it's probably still alive and hiding in the rock. Just keep the tank as clean and stable as you can. it may turn up later rather than sooner.

If it was that small, 2-3" and it was puréed in a 125, it's too small to have fouled the water. I had a big one get blenderized by an HOB skimmer 11 or so years ago and there was no water quality issue, in fact the only way we know what happened, is because we found some bits of tissue in the skimmer.

Did you ever check inside your filter, like I suggested? If not then, it's probably all gone/decomposed now. After all it's mostly water, and a bit of jelly-like tissue.

At this point I'd be rather surprised if it turns up.

My first Green Bubble Tip and my first clown fish took together in a few hours. Lucky Stuff Right?

I got a Red Bubble Tip later on with this success in mind.

I did it all as well as I could even limited the power heads to reduce the flow and so on.
It did the same thing. Walked straight down into the rock and never seen again.
