Hey everyone I'm new to the ARC and to the reef life. I recently purchased some frogspawn and noticed that the heads were staying closed all day, under closer inspection I saw some red and green growth between the fork of two heads. I don't know if this is normal or something I need to catch before its out of control. I appreciate any opinions! Thanks.

Welcome to ARC!

Is it getting stung by the tube anemone?

The red stuff could be just coralline algae (good) or a bit of cyanobacter (bad).

Those tube anemones pack a wallop. If the coral is staying closed during the day, it might be getting stung, and opening at night when the tube anemone closes.

Looks like some kind of macro algea I think. But someone else may know more can chime in.

Jenn is the perfect person to chime in. She beat me to the punch....lol

Thank you both, Jenn the tube anemone looks much closer in the pic but its not touching. Even at night the frogspawn won't open, I'll look into Cyanobacteria a little more. It looks like a cavity of some sort with whatever it is growing in it. thanks for the help!

Have you tried moving it? Things don't have to physically touch to be irritated.

If the red stuff can be fanned off with your hand, it's cyano. If it's crusty, it's coralline. I don't think that's the issue, I think it's being irritated by something. Try moving it out of the sand and up on to the rock.

+1 give it some space, LPS or at least my LPS dont much like being climbed on by crabs ect all day at the sand bed. LPS will like the stretch itself out, chances are its coming into contact with something. If you don't glue it down chances are it wont thrive.

My frogspawn wont open unless its in really low flow area, virtually no flow. Just a thought
