After enduring a horrific car accident last year, I had to step away from reefing for a while. Life shifted fast, and healing had to come first.

Back in September, I started the smallest tank I’ve ever owned, a Fluval 13.5 EVO. It’s now almost six months old and thriving. It was the one tank I held onto when I kind of ghosted for a bit.

Fast forward to now… I recently had spine surgery, and I’m slowly getting back to the things that bring me peace. Reefing has always been one of them.

I’ve always wanted a simple, small (but not too small), shallow (but not too shallow) setup. People have talked me out of nanos for years. Well… here I am with a successful nano, and I’m ready for just a little bigger and a little different.

My dream tank has always been the Innovative Marine 25 Lagoon, and it’s finally happening.

The tank arrives Sunday!!!

I’ll be taking this build slow because I am still recovering. This gives me time to slowly and strategically pick out exactly what I want without any regrets of settling. And thankfully I have my beautiful little EVO to keep me company while I plan out the new tank!

Here are a few things I’ve got running through my head at the moment:

• Lid: I purchased a custom lid from Kraken Reef for my EVO and I love it, but… IM makes a pre-assembled lid for the Lagoon and it’s only $60.
My dilemma is, do I buy the $60 lid that works perfectly fine and spend the extra money on something I care about more? I truly only bought the custom lid for the EVO because there wasn’t an off-the-shelf option. The Kraken lid is beautiful, but I’m not sure it’s much different than the one I can buy directly from Innovative Marine.

• Stand: The height matters because I want it eye level when kneeling. I have a few ideas in mind, but it’ll take some hunting.

I’m excited and wanted to share.

This tank feels like a reset for me. 💕

Here is a photo of my Fluval 13.5 EVO.

1st day of cycling started September 14th 2025
I did the fishless fuel cycle option. Once the tank was cycled (it took roughy 40 days or so) I seeded the tank with pods and fed them phytoplankton for a good week before adding the perfect pair of clownfish that I love so so much!

I use distilled to fill this tank and have continued to use it without any issues. When stepped away for a bit I gave my RODI unit away along with everything else. (Note: don’t do this unless you know for sure you are really done 🤦‍♀️) However, my husband just surprised me with a brand new unit yesterday and I am so excited to set it up! It was the number one thing I said was a “must have” if I was going to get the lagoon!
