hey guys im at my final stage for my first!!!! saltwater tank all i am missing is the water. My question is how do i do it the best way ???

i was thinking of buying a 55-60 gal drum fill with water and put a circulation pump in it and put the salt in and let it stir for an hour or so?????

and is instant ocean mix fine ??? ive got the bag and want to make sure its good

thanks again!!

is regular tap dechlorinated water not okay? what is RODI water?

and cool got the salt at a good price and okay longer circulation time okay will do

thanks barbara rodi filter is it called for lol and filter water from store hmmm

Assuming you are just filling the tank to start the cycle there is no need to age the water.

so then filtered water jugs from say wally world would be ok since they are filtered right or wrong ??? and i saw the rodi filter pretty nice but looks for something stationary or i mean frequent use ? does it pull water from your tank and clean it or is it for water changes and first time water???

RODI systems filter your tap water and produce very pure water that is composed of almost nothing except h2o.

"Purified water" you can buy from dispensing machines is less pure - remember that the average Joe has no use for RODI water so you won't find it available in Walmart, etc. RO water on the other hand is less pure and widely used for drinking water.

Saltyguy,

You'd be best off to eventually get an RODI system. Do you have a top off system or are you going to manually top off the tank?

i say you need to read more if your asking ??.

RO water from wally world is better than your tap water from home but not as good as RODI as this should not be dranked. all it is is wet as everything has beed stripped out of it.

top off system??? not sure what you mean .

and eagle yes i saw that but forgot i printed it off and i never finished reading it and no i wont take it wrong im a newbie as said and i will make mistakes because of that lol but i hope to learn this awesome hobby alot more !!!

An auto top off uses a float switch to sense the water level. As the water starts to drop it will turn on a small pump that will pump RO/DI water (without salt in it) back into the tank. This helps to keep the salinity constant. When water evaporates the salt stays behind. In a smaller system that means your salinity starts to rise so an auto top off will help you avoid that problem.

Sean, not trying to be rude, But I have already answered all your questions that you have asked in this thread , just reread the texts. Trying to safe you some time and effort

Tap water isn't impossible to use. I only got my RODI last month. I have already noticed less algae on the glass and cleaner water, but it's not the end of the world for a basic reef tank. I grow everything from softies to sps, perhaps not ideally, but it can work. Perhaps once I've seen the real difference in a few months I'll rescind this statement, but I didn't not enjoy my tank just cause of the water

when i was a kid 30yrs ago we had well water its was really hard and we had FW fish and they would die. we finally found out that we could not use our well water so we had to go to the gas station and get jugs of city water. this got real old and later they died so we stopped having fish.

things has changed now but RO or distilled is better than plain tap water.

I would guess, that even the water out of your fridge would be better than plain tap water, assuming you have a filter and it is good. I dunno , just thinking

If you started asking your refig filter to process that sort of volume you would exhaust it relatively quickly. I believe they just contain GAC.

Tap water usually has traces of metal, mostly copper, and well water is usually full of iron. Most distilled water os distilled with copper coils and has a really low ph. Also, water on the east coast has really low calcium.

well i got a water filter the other day and filled it up with a filtered tap im going to be testing for all the above bad stuff and check ill be letting the tank run til thursday and then ill have the saltwater testing kit then i will add salt and start my 4 week or longer testing process!
