Looks like a rock crab to me. Their typically nocturnal. I don't think there is anything wrong with keeping them in a reef tank. Someone else may be able to answer that.

I was told they clean your SPS but one day I bought a new SPS and that came along with it. All my SPS started to die. I dunno if it was the crab doing the damage or something else.

Looks like a Gorilla crab to me. I'd definitely get rid of it or put it in the sump if there isn't anything else down there.

doesn't look like the gorilla crab that I had, but it's not a very good picture...

bring it to my place so we can feed it to my puffer and we'll ask him what it tastes like... (j/k)

stone crab or maybe a teddy bear... either way they are not reef safe!

I'd get rid of it or banish it to the sump to be safe. I'm fearful of any crabs except hermits, pom pom, and porcelain. Just my opinion, but better safe than sorry. You'd hate to wake up to see him eating one of your fish.

the sump is the best place to leave it. If you get a positive ID you can always relocate it.

Thanks guys....from the ID site it very much looks like a Xanthid species. Not reef safe.

No sump for him either. I put corals down there on occasion.
