got a ick problem

Hey guys.. I need some help..tank has ick.I got two purple tangs that had ick but seemed to have gotten
rid of it..but I just bought a powder brown and a powder blue and I'm sure they are going to get it. I just bought
A aqua uv 40 watt classic. It seems to be helping. And I'm using garlic in the food..anyone got other suggestions?

Keep water clean and research carbon use with tangs.

Ive seen a sixline clean fish with ich before. Even severe cases. The sick fish seemed to almost aggrevate the sixline to make it help clean him/her.

Are all of these fish in the same tank?

If so, how large is the tank?

Did you QT?

What are the other tankmates?

Do you have coral or any other invertibrates?

If they are all in the same tank, then yes, there is a good chance your new tangs will probably end up with it just from being around it.
Also: Normally fish with the same body shape like you have will fight, be stressed, and end up with ich... Especially tangs...

It's probably safe to consider your tank is infested with ich now. Some say feeding is a good solution, some say move the fish to QT for treatment and let the original tank sit fallow for about 8-10 months. I'm a member of the QT and fallow club.
Give us some more info, and hopefully we can come up with something, Man...

FF337: Actually: I don't believe wrasses and cleaner shrimp don't eat the ich. They eat the dead or damages skin that the ich causes or leaves behind. They can releive a little of the stress, sometime. Ich will normally stay around with them, though...
Also: Did you mean coper instead of carbon?

Well I do have them in same tank.they are getting as long great. Noone is fighting. Did not qt because I knew that the powder blue are ick magnets. I'm sure my tank has ick but I believe once the fish in a stress free environment and is healthy it can take care of the ick itself.just wondering about some tricks to help them get to that point. Was successful doing same thing before but power went out and lost all my fish. Starting over and hoping for same success as last time..

Didn't QT because they are ich magnets? Were you afraid it would get stressed in QT? I normally QT ich magnets especially. Just make sure the tank is big enough...

How big is this tank?

We ain't beating up on you. Just need all of the facts so we can help appropirately. I too went through a tank crash from ich (due to a preventable situation, but that's another story), and (fingers crossed) am having a better experience second time around. I swore off tangs because of them being ich magnets, but with a good QT practice and prophylactic (some may disagree) treatment, now own a healthy yellow tang.

I had all my fish end up with ich after a regal was stressed out badly... and due to having reef in the tank my only options was frozen food or break down and get a UV Sterilizer. I got the UV light and within a week my fish were clear of ich and I lost only the regal. But I had a sailfin, yellow, and a naso tang in the tang and it cleared mine up of course I also continued to feed the meds

Anthony you didn't mention the size of the tank or how long it has been established. That seems like a lot of tangs for one tank, esp. 2 purples - I wouldn't recommend that, that's a fight looking for a time and a place.

The stress of too many tangs competing/sparring with each other is enough to fuel an outbreak.

I'm sure that most purple tangs are fighters but for some reason the two I have love to hang out together they follow each other around and act like best friends.. I did have to swap a yellow tang out becsuse if aggressive behavior.I've also learned that if you are going to have multiple tangs you need to make sure that the docile types like powder blues are much larger than the more aggressive ones like purple ones..sometimes that doesn't even help.but I believe the guy I bought thr two purple tangs had them in a multiple tang tank and they are used to being with other tangs. My tank is a 125gallon reef..got about five other fish in there including a copperband butterfly a flame Angel a hawk fish a couple small chromis.

Edit: Tank is 2 years old.. had the same fish in there a year ago and everything was great.til the power went out and they all died. As long as I did weekly water changes evrryone was healthy and happy..its more work but worth it to have the fish you love.

May need to scale back some, Man. All those tangs in a 125 is probably pushing the envelope. I'd probably just do one purple, and one powder (blue or brown) tang. Two tangs along with the other tankmates you mentioned above is probably going to be a good load for your tank...

Also: Powder blues can be aggressive too. If he's new to the tank, he may just not be confident enough yet to start raising cain, and is going to stress out in the meantime, or eventually get bullied himself...
