Lumix dropped off a prototype plasma lamp today at work for the electrical guys to play with, so of course I had to check it out.

Sucker is BRIGHT! Bulb is the size of a pill and the unit puts out over LUX from 3 ft(sorry dont have my par meter at work) and thats without a reflector. Bulb is 5500k but its pretty white to the eye. Looks similar to a 10k halide bulb to me.

I have some pics on my phone, Ill post up when I get home. Im waiting to see if its on loan or if they just gave it to us. If so Im taking it home for a few days:D

I'm down with playing with plasma lights. cliff, u just get to watch :D lol

Here is an entry from Reefbuilders about the first one to be released for the Aquarium Hobby. Same one currently in use at Monterey Bay:

I remember seeing that they were expensive but can't remember the numbers... anyone got them?

The down side to these is that they have to be dimmed waaaay down in order to get to any pleasing spectrum, at a large loss of PAR. This is just what I have read.

Can these things be made at different Kelvin ratings? Maybe in the future, since the product is so new.

Sounds like you'll need some blue supplementation at any rate with these, at least in the beginning.

5300K is a horrible color for a reef, IMO. Planted tanks, yes, but not a reef.
