Ok I ordered the Total Two part from BRS last night..It comes with 2 different kinds of Mag. suppliments Magnesium Sulfate and Magnesium Chloride... My question is which one does what beside the fact they raise the mag.
What does each one do that the other doesnt?
Hell, at this point any information would be great.. I have found very little info and none of it was anything that I could understand..

it raised my mag and nothing blew up.

curious to hear the answer though.

actually their vid says the sulfate is only used if your using their 2 part system to maintain calcium and alk...
yeah thats whats odd... The starter pack comes with 1 type.. The total comes with both types..Thats where I got lost..Why wouldnt you use the chloride type with the Cal and Alk if it comes with it also?

I think it's to balance out the side effects of using just one or the other. With the mag chloride, it's going to raise salinity some I think. With the mag sulfate, you can get a build up of sulfate in the tank, which you don't want. When I was dosing it, I only used the mag sulfate (epsom salts) in a pinch. In a 200g tank, you really have to add a lot of the stuff to make a difference, which worried me a bit, so I tried to stick with the mag chloride.

As long as you keep up water changes, you should be fine with either, though.

It's to avoid an ionic imbalance. I mix them 5:3 Chloride:Sulfate. Magnesium chloride actually yields more Mg than Magnesium sulfate.

If you do regular water changes, you'll avoid the imbalance anyway, and can use either.

No worries Loren..

Thanks for all the answers.. I figured it was more of a balancing act then anything I was just wanting to be sure..I figured since it came with both I would like to know why..

I do know one cool thing about magnesium.....It burns like the sun and creates it's own oxygen so you can't put it out with water!

Are you thinking about white phos?

No sir.

You know mag wheels....in the old days when they got the name they were actually made from magnesium.

If you can find an oldie that is worthless, torch it and step back!

Didn't the old VWs use magnesium engine blocks? I think I remember hearing stories about those things catching on fire.

Only way to put out flammable metal fires is to smother them using sand or other material like is in a class D extinguisher. So it does not create its own oxygen. Titanium is also flammable

This going to be a fun night, thanks for the ideas on ways to create havoc and irritate the wife the rest of the night. :D
