I guess you are cutting thru drywall on one side and again thru drywall in the closet side. I have gone thru the wall one finished side to an unfinished side, and for small pass thrus I use a receptacle box, and install it as if I were installing a new receptacle, but it stays empty, and I cut out the back of the box on the other side with a dremel. You now have a pass thru to the other side of the wall, and you can cover it with a receptacle plate cover if you ever need to.
Here's the way I do it if I need a larger opening. This is an access panel for a water turn off in a finished basement. Buy in the plumbing department Lowes/HD or any hardware store. The frame is great for lining and protecting drywall holes, and can be covered with the cover and painted. I use one of these for all my drain and return lines from my 300 thru the wall to the sump area. Comes in 6" x 9", 8" x 8", and 7" x 14" sizes.

I'd make the hole as close to pipe OD as possible, and put one of those on (before you glue it up, doh!). A little silicone so it stays against the wall and you're good.
