What's the best number of chromis to get them to school? I'm gonna go out to Marine designs who has them on sale for 1.99 but I've read that sometimes they fight so is it better to have more like 7-10 or less like 3-5? Any experience with schooling fish is appreciated

So I got 9 chromis and 3 dispars.. The chromis are already swimming in a pack but is it normal for the Anthias to swim with them? 2 of the Anthias hid immediately and the smallest one went right to the pack of chromis and is swimming with them

It's normal for them to hide this soon. They should be out within a few hours a day max.

Yea I figured they would hide its just the single anyhow swimming in the middle of the chromis I thought was odd lol it's like they are swimming around her as a protection bubble

fwiw these (and almost all fish in home tank) fish shoal, and do not school.

eventually, there will be 1-3 left in a few years....omho.

Oh, we'll I didn't realize that... I read a few things about people having issues but it seemed as tho the more there was to start the better they got along in the long run... What's the difference between a shoal and a school?

Nvm I wiki'd the shoal vs school but still everything I see says they are peaceful and that they can be in the same tank

lol, hopefully yours will do better than mine that I had back in the day.....once they got huge, they were not nice & peaceful....

I have three now that are currently battling. One of the three always seems to end up in my overflow somehow, one just pretty much camps out near its hiding spot and the smallest is the only one that swims the in the open water column. I'm expecting there to only be one in the near future. I had a similar experience with dispar anthias as well. Had five, only one left.

I have 6 that typically get along although they to pick now and then. They are in a 120g

They are very bad shippers but once they get settled in they seem to do okay. They are a cheap fish and unfortunately they are treated that way in the shipping process. After the initial deaths they usually do pretty well once they adjust. At least that has been my findings.

they are in quarantine, and down to 14. they arnt just dieing, the ones that are dead are missing fins and have bite marks on them. They are just beating each other up, its what they do and why I always tell people to buy 2-3x as many as they actually want.

When I first started, I had 7 I think. I was down to 1 6 months later. The last one survived for about 2 years. I don't think that they live that long naturally.

I had a single chromis in my first tank with a single black and white clown that ended up growing bigger than the clown it was huge and they lived together for about 3.5 yrs b4 the tank went powerless for 8 hours while I was at work

Still all here and they seem ok for now and still stay in a small tight group but I think that's also cuz my 8 line wrasse bothers them from time to time.. Still not much Anthias action tho haven't seen the one that was swimming with the chromis since the first day and the other 2 came out yesterday afternoon for like 30 seconds and hid again
