Just passing this along...

For some reason (it seemed to coincide with the initial use of carbon and gfo) I developed a huge green hair algae outbreak. I have an LED on one side of my 40 breeder and a 150w MH on the other (the MH side had a lot more hair algae than the LED side). Also the outbreak may be due to the MH bulb's age at almost a year.

Anyway I tried pulling the green hair algae out. I got fed up and since my corals are not cemented to the rocks, I moved them to the LED side of the tank and turned off my MH light. After about a week with no light, I purchased another LED for that side of the tank. Hooked it up, turned on the light and there was not a trace of green hair algae on that side of the tank.

So if you have a bad green algae outbreak and you are able to move corals around, turning off your light for a week works wonders on green hair algae. The purple coralline algae did not seem to suffer.

Also I had some blue cloves and palys on the side with no light for a week. Leaving the light off did not seem to affect them either.
