Been experiencing an outbreak of what looks like Green Turf Algae. Mostly on the live rock. Wondering if there is an inhabitant I can get that will eat this stuff or if I need to treat chemically. Also would like to find out the cause more importantly. What should I be testing? Any help appreciated?

Turbo snails do a great job of eating it. Check your phosphate and nitrate and nitrite levels. You are probably overfeeding. Reduce feeding. You can also try black out time frame. Also there is Vibrant that works (takes awhile though). To reduce phosphate and the others there are many things you can do. Like GFO, algae scrubber, &/or fuge. Water changes help. I would start with some turbo snails, then take a new tooth brush and scrub the rocks and while you are removing it siphon it out and do a water change. After that you can do like a GFO reactor, algae scrubber, or etc etc.

Green turf algae or green hair algae? I've always found the turf types (red or green) difficult to deal with. GHA on the other hand, I've got TONS of experience with that. The green turf algae usually stay pretty short and tend to me a lot more green but a lot of the times the names are used interchangeably. How old is the tank and could you post a pic?

I don’t know for certain; but can not confirm any invert to eat turf algae.

I actually have some in my display, and am currently using vibrant to take care of it.

It is definitely Green Turf Algae. Will post a photo when I get home. Very dark green, thought my urchin reproduced and had lots of small fuzzy urchins roaming around. Important to note, I was using Atlanta public water for topping off after it had been treated to remove chloramines. Recently switched to a RODI unit.

Tank was set up early November/late October.
