I have some GSP that is growing very well. Looks cool blowing around in the flow, but I am concerned that it will over take my all my live rock sooner than later.

I dont like sticking my hands in tank just to mess around with stuff so I figured I would ask before I did.

To tame this GSP and remove / frag some of it, will it peel right off the rock that it has engulfed or am I looking at having to get rid if the rocks it has overtaken becuase it is welded to it?

Also going forward should I be trimming it or somthing to keep in check or is this how people get into fragging?

Thanks Steve

More than likely you have to get rid of the rock. I have never heard of an easy way to remove GSP off entire rock. I would remove rock and then keep on top of trimming so you don't run into this again. That's just me though and keep what you want.

I don't think you will be able to peel the GSP off. I once had a rock that was covered in GSP, I didn't want it to spread so I isolated the rock in the sand bed. I would recommend this if you are wanting to keep the GSP.

It should peel off or you can scrape it off with the knife/screwdriver/razor. It is fairly indestructible. Given the position of the rock, it looks like you can just pull the rock and trim it back as needed. That's good. If it is taking over rocks you can't move, then it is more of an exercise to scape it back in place. You can also place rocks as dams around it. You can let it grow on those rocks and just pull them out when they are covered and replace them with fresh ones. You are correct that it will take over. I've found that it will out compete just about anything for space. It will grow around the base of other corals and might kill them.

Right on thanks

Edit: Landon, so it wont go across the sand or it just has a tougher time?

Mine didn't but I have seen many sandbeds that have GSP growing on and across the sandbed. As you can imagine, it makes it easier to manage.

it wont go across the sand bed. but once it completely covers the rock, it will start branching out, trying to get to another rock. but at that point the branches break right off and are great starter frags to give away

Steve. If you want to get rid of one the rocks let me know. I'll swap a covered rock for a clean one

+1. You can work it off with a blade and peel it off in a sheet....or at least in chunks.

Okay so if I can work it off, I can just leave it in chunks or is it best to put them on plugs to trade or give away.

Is GSP something someone would trade for (asking in general, not offering)or is it a rookie coral?

well that wasnt as bad as I thought it was going to be. mMost came off in chunks and was able to move big rock so it will only grow there.

Thanks
