As you may have read, I am switching over to FOWLR. I plan to use one 2 of my 4 T5 once I do this. Will GSP. mushrooms, and leathers grow under such low lighting conditions? I happened to like GSP - but will get rid of it, if low lighting will not keep it alive.

Thank you!

I used to grow leathers and shrooms under pc lights so I would assume that both would be ok with t5 under 18" of water. Why only 2 of the 4 bulbs? The gsp might be more of a problem.. while it might survive, the color might be off and it may not thrive. I would go higher in the tank with it.

Btw: for this advice you owe me a healthy size frag of gsp. I need to aquire some for my tank! :)

Come any time and scrape some off yourself.
Want to less light to limit algae growth and evaporation. If I can't do it with less light, I will sell the GSP and leathers.
Thank you!

All of those corals can survive in a low light environment, but I think that they would do better if you kept a 4 bulb T5 setup as opposed to a 2 bulb.

One other thing, what size t5 are you using?

I had all three of these in an 18" deep tank with T5s (4) and the GSP didn't do well for me, at any level. It's thriving under my MH now though. Give it a go, and if it doesn't work out for you, sell it.

I would say run it with 2 lights, if you see they are failing then run all 4 and see if they survive. . My low lvl corals are doing well in my 55g with 4 t-5's.

IMO they'll all do OK under 2 lamps. The GSP may not be as fluorescent in the lower light, but it should do just fine. Maybe not grow as fast either - but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Mushrooms can almost grow 'in the dark' (they don't need much) and leathers are pretty resilient as well. If you have any bright green leathers they may not be as green (more brown over time) - but again, they'll do fine.

I am using 4 48inch T5s; I believe thy are 54 watts each.

Thank you Jenn. They are 4 years old. I bought them from your store! I just want to cut down on light for my FOWLR.

That is probably singlehandedly your biggest problem with algae growth, 4 year old lights.

Thank you. I would agree. I was not clear. The inverts are 4 years old. The lights are replaced every year. :-)
