This wasn't a scientific approach/method that i did. Just something i thought i would try out and see what results i would get. I didn't intend to post it so i have no before and after pics but if i knew i would decent results i would have. I thought i would share my experience with everyone and see what you all thought.
So i have read and researched the elevated magnesium method of getting rid of HA. Everyone that posted their experience with the process used Kent tech M and stated that this was the only product that produced results. I had a bunch of Aquavitro Ions that i got a deal on last year and a patch of HA behind the LR that wouldn't go away. So 2 months ago i decided to try elevated Mag with the Aquavitro to treat it. I didn't change any of my other dosing or add anything to the tank that i don't normally add. The only change i made to the tank was going to 2x250MH lighting from 4x54 T5. The tank is a 55 with SPS, LPS and softies. The HA was behind the rock work and not in a place where it was exposed to direct lighting.
I spent 4 weeks raising my Mag level to between 1500 & 1550 and have been maintaining that level until last weekend when i noticed a clump of algae in the grill of an HK3. I moved the rock work a little and the HA was dead and coming off in large clumps. There was no noticeable effect on the fish or inverts.
Was this a result of the elevated Magnesium or did the change in lighting cause it to die off? I don't know. I think was probably a combination of the 2. The bulbs in the T5 fixture were 8 months old and the MH bulbs are brand new Phoenix 14K's.
My Mag has now dropped to 1437 today and i will let it fall back to normal levels and see if the algae returns. Like i said I don't know if it was the Mag or the lights that did the trick for me but i am glad it's gone.
