HA update

Back in October I posted a thread about my HA issues. My tank had almost been overtaken from what was diagnosed as derbesia. The stuff was brutal but I finally have the beaten the stuff.

I had to take a number of steps to finally get rid of it. Increasing my water changes, running my skimmer wet, adding a number of turbo snails. I even tried the Algaefix. That helped but it never really killed it off. What finally finished it off was increasing my mag using Kent Tech M to about 1500. Then I added sand sifting sea star and now my sand is the cleanest it has ever been!!

Now for the pictures.

6 months ago when the HA was out of control. You can see here just how bad it was. It was even growing on the sand. It was probably 1.5" long at that time.

Very nice, your tank looks super clean. Are you adding anything to promote the coralline growth? All that purple looks sweet. Congrats :thumbs:

And congrats on getting rid of that stuff. Tech M seems to always do the trick, I'm now finally winning my HA issue thanks to it.

Did you have to do alot of manual removing when you dosed the tech m or did it all eventually just die off?

I had to remove some but not a whole lot. I still have some in behind some rock I need to clear out though.

As for the coraline, nothing is being added other than water changes. For a while I was dosing vinigar/kalk but stopped that as my soft corals didn't seem to like it too much.

My battle is just beginning - beefed up my CUC, started raising mag (not the Tech M but may try as alot of good responses), stepping up WC to weekly, and wet skimming....I hope I win this battle before it becomes war.

About the Tech M and its effects on HA - is it the fact that it is increasing the mag enough or is there something else in it? I have a few different mag productsw and would hate to buy another if i didnt need to.

From everything I've read, I believe it has something to do with the impurity in Tech M that also works on bryopsis. And in my case it may as well have been a combo of Tech M and Algaefix that I just stopped before increasing my mag.

If you're going to try to increase you Mg using what you have and it doesn't work, then just bring you Mg back down to normal levels and then switch to the Kent stuff to bring it back up.

Nice job! The Tech M worked on my tank as well. I wish I had some before and after pics because Tech M seems to really do the trick.

Several people have recently posted about their success with Tech M after long bouts with HA when nothing else worked so I think it was that alone for you. I think i will try it if my mag raising flops...how long with Tech M before you noticed results?

I went from around 1200 to 1500 over a weeks time with hitting a peak of around 1550. I want to say it was maybe a couple of days later that I noticed an impact on the stuff. My last dose was probably 3 weeks ago.

I just checked my Mg and it's exactly 1500. A slight drop from a week ago which was ~1530.

The coralline just bounced back after I was able to get rid of the HA by increasing my Mg levels. The sand was cleaned up with sand sifting sea star which is now in my 95 gallon doing his thing down there.

And it's been almost 2 months later, still no HA. The only issue I have is the sand is getting some build up since I moved the sea star. I'm going to do a water change and I'll clean that up at that time.
