Hair and other nuisance algae - I was at the end of my rope

NO3 and PO4 are actually measurable! Throughout all my battles with HA, I have never measured anything other than 0 on either of these parameters. Coraline is really taking off.

Still have brown growth on the sandbed. Mixing it up or even siphoning the sand results in it coming back in 3-4 days.

Rock work is looking great! Corals have great color.

Lost one coral. A small, bleached monti. Not sure it was ever happy in my system.

PO4 - 0.06 ppm
NO3 - .5 ppm

Thought I would post an update. The tank has never looked better! I stopped treating with AlgaeFix around 4-6 months ago. The coralline algae has taken off. I don’t have any hair algae or dinos for the first time in probably 10 years! I’m feeding the tank like crazy with 4 cubes of frozen food a day. I had a weird problem with declining LPS coral about 3 months ago but a large water change took care of that. I do have some cyno in a couple spots but it is staying put and much easier to control than hair algae!

Po3 is at .1 and Nitrates at .25 - still measurable.

I think the trick in using AlgaeFix is to use just enough of it to knock the HA back which gives coralline a chance to take hold.

If I ever encounter hair algae again, I won’t hesitate to to use it again. Very positive result.

BRS just released a video on a product called Vibrant, their experience is that it works on all types of algae and have video documentation to go along with the research. I've been struggling with ulva in my frag tank and bubble algae, both were taken care of with Vibrant at BRS, short story is I'm trying Vibrant. The dosing is very similar to the algae fix.

Really interested to see how things work out for you. I had the bottle of Vibrant in my hand a couple of weeks ago before I decided to try to fight through my GHA a little while longer. So far, Algaefix seems like a good option to try in my case.

The video looks promising.

Let us know how vibrant works for you. I also have a small amount of bubble algae as well as turf algae in my display, and was thinking about trying vibrant (After I relocate a little Chaeto) before either gets out of hand.

@schwaggs are you still algae free? I'm going to try either Algaefix or Vibrant after a good tank cleaning this weekend.

Yep, still hair algae free. Coraline growth is great. Have some cyno on the walls and film algae on the sand but nothing out of hand. Still battling zero nitrates and phosphates despite adding more fish than I’ve ever had in the tank. I haven’t dosed algae fix for close to a year, I think.

The tank looks amazing. It's pretty much the reason I got sucked back into this hobby.

Strangely enough, I'm now battling phosphates >0.1ppm but similarly, zero nitrates even with the vegas buffet I put on for these guys every day.

@bhodges82 - how is Vibrant working for you. I've heard some people have problems with Cyno after using Vibrant. Any side effects like that for you?

I've found Fluconazole (Reef Flux) to work well on hair algae if it's getting out of control.

I found Vibrant to work OK as long as it’s not over dosed. In my case, Fluconozole did not work on it’s on, however, I would still recommend trying it. To remove GHA, it takes 4-6 weeks. I got cyano afterwards that I resolved with a three day blackout, but I did back to back doses that may have played a part in that.

I've used Vibrant regularly since I set up in April 2020 after a move. As BRS found, I think it helped me avoid the new tank "uglies". But I only dose maybe half the recommended amount. I've had no problems with algae, dinos or cyano. A chaeto fuge is my main nutrient management system, and I certainly have no problem growing it. I do have to dose Chaeto Grow once every week or two though, or it starts to turn white and die off.

Wow that's a long time to deal with all that, sorry. Too bad you didn't try setting up an ATS early on it might have won your battle long ago.
