hanging light on plaster ceiling

I am going to mount my radion (less than 5 lbs over my tank) with the ecotech hanging kit on my plaster ceiling walls.

Do you think I need some kind of anchor to support the weight, or would a long screw into the wood be enough for that amount of weight?

Was hoping to get some opinions.....


In the past I had dry wall, so the plastic anchor was mandatory, but what about plaster?

Do you mean old style plaster with wood lathe behind it? How old is the house? If you don't catch a stud, I would just use A toggle anchor.

Yep! It was built in 1920.

So if I catch a stud, just a simple screw will do, if not... toggle anchor will get the job done?

Yeah, if the lathe is in good condition a screw would be fine, but you can't go wrong with a toggle anchor.

Just mounted a radion over my daugther's tank - I used the toggles but as mentioned above, if you find the stud you can simply use a screw.

I would drill a small hole where I want the hanger to be located. If the bit has resistance for at least 2 or 3 inches just use a wood screw because you have hit the stud. If it only has resistance for an inch or so you may have hit the lath but even so I would drill the hole larger and use a toggle thereby spreading the weight out over a larger area. Lath is pretty thin and you would only have a couple of threads supporting the weight.
