So, back in the day the phosphate checkers were a bit bulky but very accurate. Lately I've seen another phosphate checker that is nice and small and wondered how it compared to the other checker. This is a nice read on them and actually how accurate they are. Sweet!

Keep in mind, I don't have one of these.....yet. Just doing some homework before I buy. I think it's safe to say this article has to be somewhat accurate, seeing how it's on advancedaquarist site......right??? lol.

I haven't compared it personally. From what I've read the only hanna checker that people have issues with is the calcium model. The others generally get pretty good reviews. The big difference in the phosphate models is range. The checker is 0 to 300 ppm. The lowrange photometer is 0 to 2.5 ppm. Since we deal with levels less then .2 ppm i went with the photometer.

I would email Hanna and ask what scientific/educational/professional institutions order and use. That answer should tell you all you need to know.

They are both low range. Both have the same Range ( 0.00 - 2.50 mg/L ) Same resolution of 0.01 mg/L and same accuracy of +/-0.04 mg/L

or just get this:

this is the low range one

Weird Ralph...the one that the club has/had, which I Believe is the 93713 model and the small egg shape one use an LED for the light source and the one you posted uses a tungsten light. Odd how they would change that.

Personally, I don't like Elos stuff....I bought several of their kits awhile back and they were either too confusing, or numbers were waaaay off. I'll stick with salifert kits and try out this Hanna egg.

Weird. Maybe I was thinking of a high range version of the checker. Sure looks like they managed to make a much cheaper version of the low range. I'd give it a shot. We can compare a sample to see if there is a difference.

Well, the one you have is tried and true with being very reliable, so kudos to you for getting it! As far as the egg goes, it does seem like they did make it smaller...though there are some issues people have it and Hanna apparently will not fix it. I guess that's part of it being so cheap. What did impress me, was they tested it agaist the Hach spectrometer, and it was very very close to matching results....awesome! I'll be picking on up in the next week most likely, it would be nice to take some tests from my tank and yours to see how they do. I'm sure at the end of the day, you can't go wrong with either of them!

I have used the Phosphate and Alkalinity checker for almost a year. when I had my water tested with a professional series test kit at one of the lfs in Johns Creek, I was extremely happy that my readings were within a few % points. My Phosphates stay around 0.001-0.003 since getting my ETSS 1000 skimmer on line. well worth the $$. You will want to order some extra reagent packs because you will waste a few getting used to the process, but once you get it down, it's a 5 min process for Phosphate and a 3 minute process for AK. The only thing about the Phosphate checker is that once it counts down from the 3:00 mark and displays the results, they only stay on for 10 sec. versus 10 minutes for the AK checker. Maybe they have changed that with the newest ones being produced.

Nope, and that's the main problem people have with them. Hanna apparently will not fix it.
