Has anybody ever done a group buy on a coral?

I have a friend on another board that gave me the scoop on a group buy they're doing. It is 8 Chalice frags. My Miami being the main frag. I am SERIOUSLY thinking about getting in on this. Has anybody ever done anything this crazy? The buy in is 200 bucks per person. I am waiting on all the details about how it gets fragged and who's tank it goes in, etc....

I'm planning on doing a group buy from Vivid Aquariums around mid-January. I think the way this will work is people will pick out what they want from the website and we'll send it in.

Are you going to have to wait for a grow out on the eight and get a frag of each or do you pick one out of the eight as your own? I'd be more inclined to buy myown individually before I waited for chalice frags to grow out large enough to be made into 8 more frags each. A lot can happen in the time it takes to grow out.

What you are talking about is really a group growout more than a group buy. These are risky at best. There were a couple failed ones on R2R. Read this:

Both were dismal failures. Too many variables with that many people. Tank crashes, people leaving the hobby, personal integrity issues. I'm not trusting enough to participate.

That being said, it'd be a great thing if it worked. I'd look on your $200 investment as a gamble. Great if it pays off, but be prepared to lose it all. Very risky.

Great in concept, but difficult in execution. IMO, a smaller number of participants, like 4 max, all local to each other, with a higher buy in per person, has a better chance of success.
