Ask the manufacturer's rep and they have never heard of the problem... yet I'd returned about a dozen in 3 months due to this very problem (lifetime warranty but after a year the distributor won't take them back).

I've been carrying/using Aqueon (aka All-Glass) and they seem fine so far (~2 years). Ebo Jager are good too but last time I checked they had a 1-10 instead of a temp setting.

Aqueons have real temp settings and indicator lights when they are on. And I have 'em on sale too ;)

I was going to recommend a stealth. never had issues with mine, but I cannot compete with Jenn's experience in my dreams if I wanted to. lol, So I am glad you guys all posted. Good stuff to know.

care to tell us the sell price of the heaters? might tempt us ya know.
i have what might be a good one somewhere. i cant find the darn thing.

i use a rena heater that has the return pulling water up to the rena xp4 so far its been super on my 29 gal. temp alway at the same temp always. good luck

The heaters usually have a chart on the box or a guideline to what size tank they are good for. Also depends on how many degrees it has to raise the temp.

Some people prefer 2 smaller heaters instead of one bigger one. If one fails (to come on) at least the other will prevent a quick drop in temp even if alone it's not enough to maintain. That's more expensive than a single heater - but a lot of folks with larger systems do it that way.

so is there any dangers using heaters on acrylic tanks? i would thing there would be. can we use the same type of heater or is there a better heater with some kind of protection around it to keep it from coming in contact with the acrylic?

No heater should be placed directly on an acrylic surface. I had a customer literally have a hole melt in his sump, because the heater was sitting right on the bottom.

Most come with brackets/suction cups.

I have 2 stealth and 1 old visitherm on my system controlled by an Aquacontroller. I never have a problem with the t-stats since they are only used as a backup. I've been running these for about 4 years. Recently one of the stealth heaters started tripping the gfci. :(

Check that stealth... smell it. It will probably smell like melted plastic (melting from within).

Those who ran them on GFCI made the same observation but chose to just keep resetting the breaker instead of investigating the problem and one almost caused a fire (almost because the breaker kept tripping before the fire started) - after a couple of days of that, the customer called me to investigate.

If a breaker trips once, and no problem is readily obvious, I reset the breaker. If it trips again - I start investigating. Those seldom trip for "no" reason.

found it!
i have a rena smart heater. are these any good?
only place i found the was at dr foster and smith.
(just so you will know what it is exactly)

I've not heard of any problems with them - but I don't stock them so that may not say much as people will only usually tell me there's an issue if they bought it from me.

fair enough jenn. i'll wait to see if anybody else comments on these.
looks very well made compared to heaters ive used in the past.

Thanks for the tip Jenn, I took it out of service as soon as I figured out the Stealth was casing the GFCI to trip! I never take chances with electrical items in water... :)

first had a Stealth - never could get it to adjust right - pulled it out and have had a Jager in my tank for about a year and works perfect.

Since they haven't been mentioned yet, IME a wise person would avoid Hydor Theo heaters. I have one (that I only use to heat my new SW in the mixing container). With the thermostat on 79, it heated my Brute to a cozy 92.9 degrees. I've also read of plenty of others' negative experiences with them also.

Contacting Hydor, they blamed it on the fact that the Brute was too small for the wattage, and said that the thermostat was fine... they couldn't see the logic in the fact that if the heater turns OFF when it is supposed to then it doesn't matter if it is a thousand watts in a goldfish bowl.

I'm glad my house furnace is not to big for my house or I would roast. I don't use this term often but whoever told you that brute was to small is a blundering idiot. Based on that logic I guess if you put it in a 1000gallon tank it would never cut on. lol

Agreed. They seem to have great CS for the Koralias and the heater guys are being uber-defensive... wonder why?

I would also like to apologize for the double "also"s in my post... too late at night for grammar I guess.
