I have been away from the hobby for 20 years and after looking at all the new technology I've decided to give reefing another try. I have an Oceanic 48 gal flat back hex. Back in the day I used wet/dry systems and an Eheim canister filter. This time I am going to incorporate a sump w/ a protein skimmer and refugium. I am thinking of converting the eheim to a carbon reactor. Any advice or help is more than welcome. :fish:

A few moves ended my reef tank. I'm am looking at building my own sump. The stand for the tank is an odd shape and I will need something custom. Looking for a 20 gal tall tank but have only been able to find longs.

Petco normally carries 20 talls. Not sure when their dollar sale is again since they just had one though. For my 55 gallon tank, I converted a 20 tall into a sump. I like it but the 20 long may work better if you want a fug. I can post a picture of my 20 tall sump that I made if it helps you think through yours.

I had a custom 20 long on my 75 gallon tank and it worked well but then I bought the Trigger Emerald 34 and like it much better.

The tank is a 48 gal Flat Back Hex w/ stand. As you can see the inside of the stand only has a small area that is wide enough to fit anything in. I still have some of the old rock, it is dry and dead. A few pieces were live rock, three pieces of volcanic rock, and another piece of foundation rock.

I would like to see your 20 tall sump. I was able to get a 20 tall for $20. They still have the sale going on. I am working on designing the baffle placement.

I built the sump. I decided to make it simple. Two 9" sections. One for a refugium where i will be placing an algae scrubber and another section for the protein skimmer. Each section is at least 12 inches tall.

That's a mighty tall sump in such a short stand, you might regret not going with a shorter sump or taller stand... It is going to be hard to get stuff in and out of there, making it a pain to maintain the sump and all of the equipment that will end up down there.

That sump is only for a pump and live rock. I put it there to increase the volume of water. The protein skimmer will go in a sump next to the tank and hidden by a small cabinet. A longer sump won't fit under the tank due to the tank being a flat back hex.

I have mocked up the plumbing for the the tank. I will be placing PVC tubes under the platform for the sump so it can roll out for cleaning and access to the sump.

I have 41 lbs of rock curing in a bucket w/ my new Jebao RW-8 pump. I can't wait to get this in the tank and start aquascaping. I have a few pieces of the dead rock from my old tank. Some volcanic rock and assorted other peices.
