Ok, so i set up my skimmer this am. After adding about 3 gal of salt water (to replace what I pumped onto the floor and in the stand) and being soaking wet I decided to turn to yall for a little help. As i adjust the water/bubble level and I approach the breaking point for collection cup all the sudden i suck water in the air line and immediately it overflows. What do I need to do? Do i need to set it low for a couple hrs and see what it does? How deep should the water in my sump be? Instructions do not include this info. :shout: Im usually pretty calm and patient with this stuff, but this morning its just not going so well. I think I am trying to rush it. Is there anything that would affect it not making a decent column of bubbles, like having had my hands in the water etc?

This skimmer was running for a month prior to me getting it. It was cleaned etc. Does that count towards break in or is that a per setup deal? Adjust to top of body and wait... Got it. Thanks!

Laughs, you know I'm reading this while I'm at work, and I'm sorry honey, I had to laugh out loud, because now I don't feel so bad about the several gallons I've put on the floor twice in recent weeks while you were in Europe... haha... ;-)

Yeah yeah... laugh it up. Its your floor.

Thanks Dawgdude. Ya know you are not such a bad guy for being a UGA:yuk: fan :D

Why do you think GT sucks all but once a decade a or 2?

Best of luck with the skimmer, btw does it have a gate valve mod?

Nope. I am assuming the gate valve would be on the output side instead of the goofy twist deal? Good idea, I think that is a brilliant idea. I may just have to do that. This is EXACTLY why we need a mentor program. Im tempted to steal you while you are a couple exits north of me. :D

I am assuming it just goes on the horizontal output right? It makes sense, and I am sitting here watching my bubble column go up and down, up, down... water level is dong the same thing and DANG that adjustment is sensitive. If I breathe on it it changes drastically. I think the gate would be more stable in the vibration environment.

Got it, ill go get my bulkheads, a gate valve, and some PVC. Hopefully by tonight sump will be complete. I am about to post pix in my bulkhead thread.

It took me a while to dial mine. After i added the gate valve which was a pain to install, the skimmer became quite easy honestly...

Did you just use a compression gate valve? I guess if at all possible it would be better to do that than seal it all together.

Ok. Where in the heck did anyone find a gate valve that will fit the ODD size schedule 10 pipe coming off the reef octo? I can't find a gate that large, never mind the bulkheads.... they are threaded but don't fit into a 1 1/8in thread (sch. 40 or 80) and flop around in a 1.5 in. Ohh well, bulkheads im fixing tomorrow, this gate mod on the octo.... I am going to need someone to point me to a supplier.

Hmmm let me take a look in the morning at mine.. They normal twist pipe was taken off and PVC replaced it.. Its not super snug but just enough to be able to slide it out with ease.. Right above that there is a T fitting and more PVC running straight up(bleed line) on the middle of the T it runs out to a few couplings then the PVC gate valve(think its 1") the about 2 inchs to another T. The center fitting going toward the skimmer, the top capped off and the bottom is where the water drains back into the sump.. Does that even make sense without a picture? I'll post one in the morning anyways..

Pictures would be a huge help. I would really like to perform that mod, the twist adjustment is getting old after 2 days. I will be posting pictures tomorrow as well. I FINALLY got all my rock work finished this evening, and I cant wait to show off my super sweet Marshall Island rock I got from Jenn that looks like a giant skeleton hand giving the special finger! (so fits Melissa and I's personality)

Awsome.. I have a picture of it already on my photobucket.. Just not sure what page out of 30 pages it is off hand and don't want to dig while on my blackberry.. Or better yet I can pull it off in the morning and snap some pictures from a few different angles..
