If you have another union. Take the union that is connected to the pipe apart. Then take the new union apart and mix match the unions to see if you have the same problem. If you do sounds like you have a bad union. Any chance you mix matches the unions going together?

This is exactly what the problem was. The side with the gasget (or however you spell it) was misthreaded. Luckily i had another union laying around and could screw it in flush to make sure it wasnt the side with the nut on it (this would have meant cutting the pipe and putting in a new bulkhead, which is my least favorite part of this hobby BY FAR - crack a brand new tank just once and bulkheads become your own personal hell)

You have two different union parts....don’t know how that happened
