Help!!!! My heater busted!

Surprised it didn't trip the breaker.

I too, lean toward overheating that may have led to the breakage, as that is the most likely scenario, IMO.

Do you know if the tank got hot?

Not that there's anything much you can do if it did, but sometimes there's some solace in knowing just what went wrong.

This is a common (Muphy's) law of reef keeping.

During any catastrophe, everything dies according to how expensive it was, starting with the highest priced!
 
It was mounted in the chamber (3rd chamber) where my return pump is in my BC14. I think that maybe the water got too low in that chamber and maybe when I added some top water it cooled it too quickly and it busted. This is the only logical scenario I can come up with. The third chamber is the one that gets low when the water evaporates. I never let it get too low though and this has never happened in the past. Oh well, live and learn!
 
The heater should be in the first compartment, on the right in a BC14. The water level never changes in that chamber....

That sounds quite likely, unfortunately.
