A couple of weeks ago I noticed there was some red slime growing along my sand bed and along the rocks. I have done water changes two or three times, syphoned the sand bed. Nothing seems to be working to get ride of this problem that continues to spread. HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!

Sounds like cyano, look into your phosphates/nitrate levels and perhaps try cutting down on your lighting cycle to help reduce. Although the lighting will help, its steming from somewhere and you need to figure out what the root is.... Its usually a popular topics, just search the site for cyano and im sure youll find tons of threads in regards to this.

+1

Cyano = too many nutrients in the tank. Are you using RO?

I checked my levels and everything came back normal....

Edit: No I don't have a RO unit I have been looking into a few different ones here lately. Didn't really feel like I needed one and i've always heard mixed views on them.

Not saying they didnt or your wrong but you wouldnt be having cyano outbreaks if something wasnt off....

Primary causes are lighting (old bulbs) or phosphates/nitrates as those are food soruce for it which come from over feeding, not using RODI water, etc...So id probably start with one and go from there, easiest way to reduce the outbreak is to just siphon it out with water changes which will help out as you resolve the cause.

Just like gmpolan said, something isn't right. You might want to start off by cutting your lights off for like 3 days. And be very scarce in your feeding.

What parameters did you check that came back "normal"?
Tds from your water supply?
Low level Po4?
Low level Nitrates?
Nitrite?
Ammonia?
Ak?
Ph?
SG?

How much water flow do you have in your tank?
What type of lights? How old are the bulbs? How long is your photo period?
What do you feed? How often? How much? The food you feed may have high levels of phosphate- check labels.
Running carbon in a reactor?
GFO in a reator?
Any additives you add to the tank?
How old is your sand bed? How deep?
Last water change? How much? What tank size?

All of these "parameters" have an effect on Cyano and other undesirable algae (even though Cyano is a bacteria, not an algae).

Depending on the answers above, you will take a different approach.:)

Mixed reviews!?!:confused2:

Ask any of the TOTM winners if they use RO or not. I'd bet they all do.
