Help temp issues!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Forum,

I have a 180Gal with 25Gal sump. i am currently using T5 H/O 4 bulb fixture enclosed in a wooden cannopy! I just modified my Canopy to have two electric computer fans installed on the top to circulate air flow through the top canopy! I have disconnected my heater stick as well.

I am still having problems with temp though. my ambient temp in my house is 73(F). i have removed half my glass tops and im stumped on how to lower it to normal.

water reading is 83-84(F) all my fish are doing great 2x Semi-Larvitis Majestic Angel Naso Tang Purple Tang Blue spot Jawfish and 7xGreen Cromis. (I lost my Nemo today that i have had for 3yrs very sad) but all othe fish are healthy and active and normal. all water tests come back clean

WHAT CAN I DO??????
 
That's not that bad. I keep mine around 82-83. I think it's best not to fight it. You could do more damage chasing the numbers around. I agree with Cliff on the glass tops. They are a giant heat trap.
 
Fan blowing in and one blowing out is counter productive.. Needs to be:
Both blowing in
Both blowing out..

Both blowing in seems to work best if I remember right..

Yeah, if you have 1 in and 1 out, you essentially are only getting the benefit of 1 fan (Y cfm in = Y cfm out). Point the 2 fans in the same direction and you have 2 x cfm.
 
I have the fan thing going 1 in 1 out now i will change to 2 in but will that really bring me back down to LOW 80's HIGH 70's???

what about corals i lost all but two of my corals (leather, and monster hairy shroom) all else kicked the bucket!

I would take off the glass top (if any) and also use more energy efficient pumps. eheim pumps and tunzes are great in putting out less heat. I have mine go down to 78 with the home temperature at 75.
 
Get a small AC fan to blow across the sump and remove the glass tops. I am worried about the blue spot jawfish... that temp may be too high for him.

I got both fans going in and ALL glass tops off.

with all my water parimaters exlant would it be safe to add a new fishie tomorow??

any other ways to cool the water off with out forken out hundreds of dollars on a chiller. ( i will tr every thing you guys recomend)

You could add a fan blowing on the water in your sump as well to increase evaporation.
I would wait on the fish
 
I find that during the summer I have to have all my heaters off in my tanks and they seem to stay pretty consistent from day to day at around 79-81* Its a three degree change because of the basement temps, ambient temps etc. My recommendation, is turn off all heaters if you haven't done so already.

True.... but with a 73 ambient temp, and just 4 T5s over a tank that large?? There is NO reason it should be running that hot. Mine will stay under 83 without the chiller hooked up, and I keep my house no cooler than 78 and have halides over it. I think there is an issue with equipment somwhere (pump getting too hot, bad thermometer) on this system.

It is a weird aerodynamics things, and I forgot the explanation - but one fan in and one out are actually less effective than having only one.
I think I remember that two fans can never exactly spin the same speed and therefor one fan needs to push/pull the other too which in return decreases its efficiency.

Barry is right, you shouldn't be having that high a temperature issue at 73 degrees room temperature.

Look and see if your heater is malfunctioning and is on. Unlpug it and see if the water temp goes down. It could easily be a bad heater
 
I have 12 T5 HO lamps under an enclosed canopy with a house temp of 73. I only have one fan blowing across the light vents and out and it is fine. Before i removed my tops it was a little high -about 82-83 like you. now im fine - stays between 78-80 for the most part.
 
I just mounted a 10 inch box fan in my sump. Its suspended and i have it on a timer i can maintain 79.5 degrees pretty constant throughout the day,
