Hey, my blue hippo tang has white specs on it. It looks like an ich. What should I do? I dont have a quarantine tank and the tank is filled with inverts. Help fast, Please !

Thanks in advance,
Jimmy

You need a QT, that's the first step. I couldn't get mine setup timely and I lost several tangs a month ago.

IF you don't have a QT tank you really need to invest in a GOOD UV sterilizer. I had your same problem " No QT".

I did some reading and it said that UV can only prevent it, not curing ich. Is this true? I'm battle ich too and want to make sure I do it the right way.

I believe you are right in that. The UV can kill ich when it's in the water but won't do anything for the actual infection. From what I've read is to be sure to feed lots and enrich their foods with vitamins.

I'm sure others will chime in who have dealt with ich and can give full details as to how to fight this.

Leave the fish in the DT. Moving the fish can cause undo stress and possibly kill the fish. Feed the fish well and it'll be fine. Mine has ich from time to timeand I never treat or use a UV.

I guess it also depends on the type of fish. Some will knock it right off, while others like the PB tang can die within 24 hours after infected.

Mix focus and metro in the food and feed well. The metro and focus will help with secondary infections. Also you can try to add some cleaner shrimp which will clean the ick off of your fish. Cleaner gobies will too but is kinda cruel since they can get ick too. Keep the lights kinda low and shorter light periods so your fish stay clam and stress free. The UV will help prevent it from coming back later. After your fish are ick free you might want to think about the shark nose gobies then..

alright, if i get a quarantine tank , what will i need to do after the fish is in the tank ?

There are some really good threads on the subject that you should read. Unfortunately, the forum won't let you search for words under 4 characters. However, Google is your friend. Search google with the following:

Brandon put together a lengthy overview on Ich that includes a description of what it is and various methods for treatment:

Here is a discussion on the subject:

Your first course of action should be to learn about the subject. Don't jump on treatments until you understand what you are dealing with. You will get 20 different opinions on the subject.

When did you notice the spots? How long has it been?

I am kinda with Hackman on this. I have noticed spots on my Regal before too...but they seemed to disappear after a week or so. I only saw the spots a couple of times right after I got him.

UV can help but wont erradicate ich, only "cure" for ich is a fallow tank (no fish) for at least 30 days. Some have been successful (including me) with increased feedings soaked in metro & focus, a raise in temp and vitamin enriched foods. No substitute for QT though......do a search for ich on the boards, so much good info on ich

demi - BTW, the Clowns spawned AGAIN last night - more this time

UV only solves one part of the equation. UV kills the free swimming stage of the parasite and only IF the organism goes through the sterilizer. Once it's on the fish, that ship has sailed. And since most people don't have it set up that 100% of their water goes through the UV, it can only kill a fraction of the free swimmers at best.

Best prevention: Quarantine/observation/treatment if indicated, along with low stress, good water quality and varied diet.

There are a few different methods for treatment, depending on how aggressive you want to be.

My preference: Seachem Cupramine IN A QUARANTINE TANK ONLY!!!!! Never in a display - copper kills inverts.

Other options: Seachem Metronidazole with Focus in the food, (can be done in DT), and/or the same as a water treatment (QT ONLY!)

Hyposalinity to deter the growth/reproduction of the parasite. This is sometimes helpful but most often if used in conjuction with another method.

It lasted for about 4 days. I checked it this morning fortunately they white spots are gone, but I still see bumps. I have a cleaner shrimp do you think it helped it out?

Nope. Ich goes in cylcles. May be doing so and amping up for round 2. Your fish may also and hopefully be getting healthier and fighting it off. Keep us updated

sure will. looks healthy to me. The bumps slowly going away, but im keeping a close eye on it
