Help with my Sun Coral

Disclaimer: I am a newbie.

So I just picked up a nice sun coral. I have heard that they like low to no light and are somewhat cave dwellers. However, is there anyway to get them to open up during the times when my lights are on? As soon as my lights turned off they came out. Should I put them in a shady area so that they come out during the lighted time and still come out? or is there a way to get them out in the clear light? Help me.

Naturally they hang up side down I think. Doesnt matter where you put them as far as light really. I put mine in the shade down low. You can get them to come out at feeding time if you feed at around the same time everyday. These corals have to be fed because they do not get energy from the light.

I have found that if you feed them enough Mysis Shrimp they will come out during lighted hours. You have to load them up.

They will grab the food with their tentacles like an anenome its pretty cool. You will def enjoy these. Cyclopeze works well too.

i checked online and saw that people do this top-cut-off-the-two-liter-thing... So that others can't get the food. Do you guys do that? or just spot feed it with a dropper? is Rod's food good?

yes I found a minute maid apple juice 20 oz at the gas station that had a wide bottom that works perfect for me. My skunk cleaner shrimp is a hog. Do it with all pumps off too. Also the apple juice bottle has a really big top that i could insert my turkey baster in so I could target even better

Though mine is technically a Dendro, the same holds true. If it is closed, just squirt some food juice at it and it will open slowly. If you do it at the same time every day it will be waiting for you to feed it.

I totally agree with the above posts concerning feeding the Sun Corals... spot feeding is the way to go to make these things happy and healthy.

Another thing that has worked well for me is using the Brightwell Aquatics Phytochrom food... this is a mix of pholyplaynkton that is is fed to your filter feeding corals via suspension in the water column. While I would not use this in place of spot feeding the Suns, if you turn your skimmer off and drop a half capful of this stuff in the tank, the Suns will open up to feed. I usually use this 2-3 times a week to supplement feeding.
