I recently bought three scarlet hermit crabs and got a mystery hermit crab for free. I think I have identified the "mystery hermit crab" as a dwarf red tip. It has brown legs with red tips and red attenea. The scarlet hermit crabs are very sluggish and the red tip is very active and interesting.

My question is it normal for scarlets to be inactive and have I correctly identified the "mystery hermit crab" and is it reef safe?

Scarlets are fairly inactive compared to blue legs, which look like they took crack for their ADD problem.

Some are for hermit crabs, some are against. As long as it's a hermit, and is not huge, I would let it be.

Agree. I do not keep any hermits / crabs in my tank. Everytime I would try to feed my LPS the hermits would be all over them stealing the food. :(

thats funny my snails are the ones that gang everything in my tank...i feed and like 10 snails come and get the corals food lol

your crabs will be fine. the hermits tend to want snail shells for homes.
that said, get you some shells for the hermit to select from.
this draws their attention away from the snails. aside from that snails do do a great job but i still say a few crabs are needed to complete the clean up crew.
