Ok so i have started my 125. first id like to post pictures but i am up to my amount so sorry. Idk how to delete them. gonna be a member after Xmas.


First. this tank sat for like 4 years. This tank was Saltwater.
Would i still be able to use the crushed coral? Also i am using bleach to clean the build up of water residue and so on do i just rinse the crap outa it to get rid of the bleach?

Second the filter system on it is a Second nature WDF 4000 and a SN whisper power filter. Both rated for over 60gs. Worked fine for the 10 years they had this tank. My problem is the filters inside are toast. They dont make the 4000 anymore and i dont have the funds to get a new filter. Does anyone know a site that sells old discontinued stuff?

third My 37 has had the sand in it for under 6 months will it be ok to just transfer the old sand? I plan on getting some more sand if i can get some for cheap. This is only if i cant really use the coral. I dont want to but if i can i will.

Be sure to treat it and remove any chemicals (bleach).
Last-depends on the sandbed and the amount. If its only a few inches in the 37 then add it to the top of the 125 sandbed and seed it. Before you livestock of course.
Go for a 55 for a sump in the new guy
 
Thanks Smoothie. I was going to use the 37 as a sump as it is what i have. Sump does the same thing as a filter right?

Also the sand bed is really thin. Maybe a inch. It has been stirred a lot as it has been moved by me to get it how i like it and my Snowflake Eel loves to burrow and move it all
 
I agree with smoothie I would try to find a old tank and make a sump out of it. You can find a great deal on a used tank and that will give you better filtration
 
It will probably do for now but you may outgrow it later by adding things as you go. I personally can relate on not having the funds at times so you work with what you got. The nice thing about a sump is you can tailor it to meet your needs of what works for you.

Go for a 55 under that tank. You should be able to pick one up that has been sitting in someones garage for a short while for a very cheap price ;). Baffle it up and blammo.......sump!. IMO it is better to do this now. If you wait until you get everything setup and then do it, it can be a nightmare.

2. You don't "need" a mechanical filter. It's a nice to have if you have the money for it and more importantly, the tenacity to keep it MAINTAINED (which means cleaning it every few weeks. An extra 30 min to my water changes).

3. I would not reuse crushed coral. I wouldn't use it in the first place. It's too big and will trap detritus. You WILL regret this. If you do use it, clean it VERY VERY well (rinse for hours) and only do like 1" so that you can vacuum it regularly.

4. The sand from your old tank can be reused, but again, you need to RINSE IT. You can't just swap it over because it's full of detritus and rotting nutrients which can nuke your new tank. If you want to save a cup of it skimmed off the top, go for it, but other than that you should be rinsing it.

Ok guys im having problems keeping the tank run in the basement. Our basement and garage are tied together to the breaker. so if i leave my big heater on for the dogs and the tank it blows. my dining room is right about the tank and im thinking of drilling a small hole for the cord and be done with this problem.

Ok i have had the water itself running in the tank for almost 5 days now.
Ill be honest, i used hosed tap water. I dont have the drums or money for RO water. I did treat it with some chems.
First question.

How do i go about adding the salt? Just poor into the tank till its right and run my power heads?
Second. i was told to use all my old water, is this true?

You may need to add a breaker or 2 dedicated to your tank.

On your first set up with no livestock, you may just add the salt to the tank, but for future water changes, you will need an unused tub or trash can to premix the water. Also, a small pump and heater for premix container!
 
You'll want to spend the money and get an RO/DI unit, or get a smaller tank and get RO/DI water from a local store. If you try and cut corners now, you'll pay for it later, and end up frustrated with algae.
 
haha yeah im not sure how hard it is to run a new breaker. But i understand the changes and all i just wasn't sure if i can just all my salt and sand to the new tank. thanks shrimpy
 
True it is all in the works. i used tap for my 37 and never had algea problems. So we shall see. I do plan on buying jugs and going to Nemos to get my RO water for now on this was just to fill it
