Got a hippo tang, around 3-4 inches from atl aquarium. Has appeared healthy for about a month or more, but now has small white spots everywhere! I'm assuming it's ich by the way it looks. He seems to be acting normal so far.

I've read about copper and hypo salinity, but I'm not sure about going about trying to treat him!

Don't sweat it. I just went through this. He'll make it.

I fed him 2 or 3 times a day food mixed with Metro. Add garlic if he doesn't like it. Keep feeding for several days after the spots go away.

Here's my thread with great input from a lot of people:

You won't want to use copper unless he is in isolation....aka QT. I've used heat to deter it but that doesn't always work either. There's also using a UV or other Ick solutions in QT.

so as long as he keeps eating, he should be fine, just wait it out?

Get some metro & focus (focus binds the metro to the food) and some garlic to make it taste better. Your odds will be MUCH better if you get him eating medicated food.

+1 this has proven to work for many of us here. Keep feeding him this for awhile after the spots go away.

+100

My hippo gets ich once every 4 months or so. Feed with Metro and Focus and it disappears after about a week or so.

Most stores should have it. I do, but I'm a hike from you.

that would be great, where in Flowery Branch are you? I might be able to come by today

Ralph, you are ruining your image!!! Pretty soon people are going to think your a nice guy. :-)

You can try Dr G's medicated frozen food. I am using the anti bacterial that has Kanamycin & Metronidazole in my 600 gallon reef. It is much less trouble than mixing your own with focus and metro from seachem. The only place around here that carries it is pure reef in Alpharetta. I wanted to use the anti parasite but it was out of stock bt due in at the end of this week.

Anyway the idea is to get the meds in the fish and not your water so make sure to keep your carbon fresh and don't let any big chucks of food sit on any corals. I got some "burn" marks on a few sps when I was making my on food which would sink faster and I didn't take care to keep the large chunks from falling into an sps. I now hold the frozen chucks in a pair on oversized tweezers. I let the fish come and bite off pieces and also shake it to get smaller pieces floating around for the smaller fish.
