Noticed this little guy in my overflow tonight. Never had a clam in my tank, always wanted one. Are these common? I put it in my anemone isolation basket. I have not seen it open. Maybe it is dead and came with my rubble/sand? In that case I don't know how it would have ended up in my overflow.

I've got a few but they're bigger and black. It does appear to be alive. As soon as they die, their shell usually opens up. I've never known a hitchhiker clam to be a problem. If it were in my tank, I'd place it in a divot on a rock and see what happens. I have one that I've never seen open but after a few weeks in one spot I tried to move it and it had attached itself to the rock.

I wonder if that means I am ready for a Tridacna. How worried about bristle worms should I be before getting one? I know I have them in my tank. I have heard they will eat maxima clams

I would not use them as an indicator. Mine survived through me nuking my tank a few times over the past 3 years. 100% sure they’re tougher than large, delicate clams.
