HLLE/HLLD or Hole in the Head: a theory

I've been quiet for a while in this thread but still following it.

While my "rescue" tangs are holding steady, the Koran Angel's symptoms are worsening.

All of the conventional methods we've been using don't seem to be effective. I'd be open to trying something new to help this guy.

Bill, earlier you mentioned fish oil capsules or similar - I'd be willing to try that if you could point me in the right direction for a source.

I don't have a "control" to make it a proper scientific experiment, but I'd be willing to photo-document anything new that we can try to try to help this fish.

Jenn-

I'll come see you and bring the vitamin D.

FWIW- low vitamin D levels have recently been reported to be correlated with Alzheimers.

I too wonder why some people with low levels of vitamin D get one kind of disease, and others get either nothing or something different. Genetics are involved as well.

Something called Telomere length is thought to be involved, and affected by vitamin D levels. Telomeres are special protective sections at the end of genes. Every time the DNA replicates (copies itself), a little bit of the protective telomere gets used up. With lower vitamin D, the telomeres are thought to wear faster. When a telomere is gone, there is nothing to protect that gene from damage and mutations begin to occcur. Don't worry, your body has special genes just to protect against genetic 'accidents'. One of these protector genes is called the P53 gene, for example. However, when the telomere on that P53 gene is gone, it's a very bad day down at the gene factory! When genetic damage occurs unabated, results are unpredictable.
