hole bottle of flake food dumped into tank!

You can buy saltwater premixed from a lot of the stores. I've got some jugs you can use. Call me 404-422-2056. I won't be in front of ARC much today.

its alright dave i have a few jugs myself as well, one of my stores here sells it i know, never have been a fan of doing that tho. but i may need to...

i dont care if its from fish health or coral quality,
first thing she always asks is water parameters.
theres a reason she does this.
by knowing water parameters several things
can be ruled out or brought into focus.
knowing can cut back a hours worth of Q&A.

oh can i ever say it enough, jenn rocks.

That's the first thing everyone should always ask.

well so far i have done 40 gal total water change within two changes each 20 gal i am going to do another tonight. meanwhile i will be siphoning watter into a rubbermaid, placing all rock and coral in the rubbermaid siphon out as much food as i can while the tank is empty except sand and fish, then place everything back in and slowly add new water. Anyone have any comments about this....

If you have carbon or a Polyfilter, I'd run that too - to help remove organics and clean up any tint in the water (could just be from the food coloring in the food, or could be something else).

Get your parameters tested ASAP.

You will likely experience a diatom bloom some time in the next week to 4 weeks also - from the parameter shift and the massive water changes that have undoubtedly upset the ionic balance of the tank.

How are your inhabitants doing?

We once had a customer's "tank sitter" drop a half of an 8-oz package of frozen Mysis in their tank (after all, the note said "half a cube" - but she didn't find the cubes, she just found a new flat-pack  ) 2 days later when the water was all milky she called us... it was a 120. 30-gallon water change to suck up all the decomposing food, and we slapped a large canister filter on there for a few days (in addition to the sump/skimmer) - skimmer had Polyfilter and a bunch of carbon, floss and phosphate sponge. They did have a small ammonia spike which we combated with some Seachem Prime, and in the end they didn't lose anything but it was touch and go for a while.

Hopefully you will dodge a bullet - but you will know better where you stand once your water has been tested.

So should i not empty my tank floor out and siphon the food out it would be very easy for me to do so at the moment, only thing i dont want to do is clean it to fast that would be another bad idea right?

For clarity - Prime will bind ammonia but it will still show up in a test if it's present. It will render it less toxic, but doesn't make it "disappear".

Downtime - yes the more junk you can remove and prevent from decaying (and becoming ammonia/nitrite/nitrate) the better.

alright i will be emptying all rock and coral tonight, place in buckets of tank water then siphoning food out, replace corals , then fill tank back up with fresh salt water.

I dont really see the need to remove all the rocks and coral at this point as this might just stress the fish and release additional toxins by way of stirring up the sand. Do use prime and or stability as it will help a bunch. Removing the liverock is like removing your heart, it is afterall your primary biological filter. Great job IMO with what you have done so far. I am not saying to fly blind but you have what you have right now so keep your piece of mind.

I typed it wrong when i made my account its pittsview alabama. Two and a half hours south west of atlanta. i cant figure out how to change it...Alright fish scales i will keep that in mind thanks for the words on my decions on wat i have done.

yea i am in phenix city now with my gf heading back home at ten to do more tank work, i work in columbus actually.

I respectfully disagree. If temporarily removing the rock to vacuum under it, and then replace it, causes all kinds of 'toxins' to be stirred up, then there's something dreadfully wrong with the tank besides the food that was dumped in.

A properly maintained sandbed and live rock are no more dangerous when they are moved around, than when they are left where they were placed originally.

It's good for your tank to rearrange things periodically - stir up any detritus and get it out of the system by way of vacuum, filter pad/sock and/or protein skimmer.

Well i didnt do that last night as a few people told me not to, but like jenn over half of them said i should.

Did you get your water tested? How are your inhabitants doing?

Send a PM to tjherman (Tamara). She can change it for you. I have tried to do it for folks, but don't have access to that area.

Thanks arc i will do that soon.

To jenn my water is testing normal at the moment no ammonia spikes no nitrate spikes there is a little nitrate in the test, I think my 20 gal water changes twice a day are keeping them down. Fish look good no heavy breathing like yesterday swimming peacefully and nibbling on rocks at least tangs are. Corals are actually looking better than before the fish food was dumped in..... i had a few heads of frogspawn and hammers not wanting to open fully they are actually looking a bit more happier now. Also some of my zoas and palys like my nuclear green paly look healthier, only coral that looks a bit un happy would be my pom pom xenia. Water has been clearing up fast gets more clear with every water change.

alright everyone, so far i have seen no visible health problems with any livestock, I have still been doing at least one 20 gal water change a day. the water is clear again, And my nitrate nitrite ammonia all look good. I now have my ro unit going finally i have already made 10 gal of ro water going to do a 10 gal water change tonight with ro and see were i am at from there! Thanks for all the help people!
