Maybe my technique for bumping up my salinity levels is not the practice, but wow. Has anyone ever mixed a small amount of "Salinity" with tank water? I was going to make a saturated solution into a tupperware so i could gradually increase my salinity level, ive been reading most SPS are happier in the 1.024-.026 range. When i poured the water into the tupperware with the salt, it instantly got hot enough to where i wanted to put it down, lol. Do all salts do that!? i've never noticed. Or is it just because they overload the salt with chemicals? I mean its obvious some kind of chemical reaction... Anyone ever noticed this? Am i doing it wrong? lol

Happens with virtually all salts (in the chemical meaning), completely normal...

The best way to bump up the salt level is during regular waterchanges.

Lots of compounds that contain chlorides will produce heat such as you experienced, but chances are that many of the additives that are in the salt were likely rendered useless of less effective as they were not immediately dissolved in water, at least thats what the rep from IO once said.

Always add salt to enough water to completely dissolve the salt immediately so all the additives can completely dissolve

Edit: Please forgive my grammar/usage in prior post, I was typing while helping my son pull his tooth.....LOL

thx robb, chem was over a decade ago.... i couldnt tell you if there was a chemical reaction in dissolving salts anymore lol... Thx dakota9 for the info, thats how i would normally do it, but im still on the fence about salinity. so ive been avoiding frequent water changes. ive heard people say the top half of their bucket is trash and the bottom is amazing, so i dont know. oh well.. guess ill start making some water

I have slowly raised SG by pouring small amounts of dry salt mix into the filter socks I use. It stays in the sock and slowly dissolves with al the water runnng through the sump/ Never any issues doingit this was.

For example, if I drip acclimate and use a gallon of tank water, my ATO replaces the water and I just pour 2/3-3/4 cup or so of salt mix into my filter sock.

I too have used dry salt this way without any issues. I prefer to just top off with saltwater if I can.
