I don't want to get into the story of how this happened:mad2: but someone/some people allegedly put either lysol, windex, iodine, hand sanitizer or a combination of above in one of my tanks. My skimmer when I came back was acting up, my clown died, and my hammer looks rough. My question is do I need to throw away the live rock and sand? What can I do to clean this tank to make it habitable in the future? How do I clean the equipment (skimmer, pump, and heater)?

I get some polyfilter in there post haste. Wouldn't pitch the rock though. That's just a hunch and is in no way an endorsement of scientific truth

Sounds like you may need a good divorce attorney and a large caliber handgun..oh and run carbon!

Polyfilter for sure - the kind made by Polybio Marine.

HUGE water change. Carbon... this is one of those times when upsetting the ionic balance with a huge dilution is preferable to leaving toxins in.

It would help if you could figure out what was thrown in there, (!!!) that might us help determine whether you need to can it all and start again, but it sounds like you might not get a straight answer anyway. :-/

How unfortunate :(

Water changes as soon as possible. "the solution to pollution is dilution" Purigen has worked wonders for me in the past, leave it in for a week then remove.

My wife would never do anything to my tanks.

I have a about a tablespoon of ROX carbon in it when it happened. I did a water change on the day I returned. I changed about 1/2 of the water out of it. I will add some more carbon when I return back to work. I may do another big water change. I hopefully will find out what they put in it sometime this week.

Shame on the person who did that! I meant who in his sane mind would do something like that just to laught for what it could happen to those indefense animals. That's not fear.

Hope you can get things straighup, I was thinking on adding supplemental bacteria at the same time after you do the water changes just to keep the balance and population back on place. Jmho

Jenn doesn't give bad advice. I second all of the above at once!

I followed most of the advice. Her advice is invaluable. I was not able to get the polyfilter only because time. The tank did look better on Monday and it looks like the hammer coral is going to pull through. I am going to change the carbon out as soon weather permitting.
