How big does a BTA get before it splits?

I have had good success with anemones in my tank, and currently have three bubble tips (2 green, 1 read). I am really interested in getting the red bubble tip to split and have begun feeding it three times per week with mysis shrimp (I feed the other two anemones once per week). I started the triple feeding a few months ago and the red anemone has gone from about 5 inches across to almost a foot across.

Here is my question... for those of you out there that have seen your anemone split, how big did it get before it decided to separate into two?

Wow that is impressive! When the 6 inch one split, did it turn into two 3 inch anemones?

Yeah it was something like that. They are doing very well.

My RBTA is 14" across and hasn't shown any sign of splitting yet, so....

You can force a split. The are very hardy. It just takes a good, clean cut across the mouth and more than likely it will split into however many cuts you make.

My green nem was well over 24" tenacle to tenacle before it split.

I think it depends on the creature. I have seen a "pattern" with the one(s) we've had in a client's maintenance tank for nearly 10 years. They get huge, and they will split somewhat randomly, but most of the clones that I've traded in and resold, do the same thing. That particular set of DNA likes to split, and the individuals get pretty big before they do split, but they grow big, fast (in a variety of different tanks), and they don't have a "timetable" as such but everyone reports splits before too long.

I'm no expert (nor did I stay at a holiday inn express last night), but in my reading, anemones tend to split when stressed. I've read multiple accounts of people getting their nems to split by starving them for a couple of weeks and doing a LARGE (50%) water change.

Alternatively, splitting by a cut across the mouth is pretty common from what I've read...

If your nem is growing and not splitting, you're "doing it right". LOL..

Came home Saturday from a lake trip and my RBTA had split. He was about 5 inches in diameter. They are both healthy and water conditions seem to be very good. I feed mine brine often and a couple times a month i feed him and my GBTA pieces of raw shrimp.

Ding ding ding!!

In the natural environment, splitting is a method of survival and replication..

Kinda like Fungia plates dropping small ones..

I wonder why in a home setting in tanks that they seem to be thriving in why they split.. Maybe they are lonely. LoL

Or perhaps there is an unseen factor and they are not as happy as we perceive..

Maybe they can't believe how incredibly good they have it and fear something bad to happen?
